These Green Hills

I left this place to seek a dream
Which turned to sorrow's dread
And in my sick and dizzy thoughts
Green hills swirled through my head

The visions of this lovely place
Brought feelings of release
My mind would wonder back again
To greens of calm and peace

To hills that hold the memories
Within their walls of green
And cradle my sweet childood
And mysteries of my being

In my despair I’d travel back
To these dear woods of mine
And sit along a flowing stream
As in a distant time

I thought I heard the cricket sing
When night fell on the hills
I saw the mounds of crystal snow
Pile on the window sills

The air held scent of lilac
And the trees turned bright and bold
In autumn hues of purple-red
In crimson, flaxen- gold

Then on my very darkest day
I knew I would return
To these lovely hills of greenery
Where all my passions burn

They give my spirit harmony,
They soothe and pacify
They determine how I live my life
And how I’m going to die

For it will be in peace, my friends
That I will live my days
In rapturous splendor of a song
That pours from morning haze

And it will be within the sound
Of crystal flowing streams
Here within the essence
Of my past and future dreams

And it will be on woodlands edge
Where lacy redbud grows
And it will be within the fragrance
Of a splendid rose

This is beautiful flowing poetry Elizabeth, with such wonderful images and reflections of a precious place. I too go back every once in a while to some of the places I roamed as a young boy and those same types of feelings overwhelm me. This so nostalgic and warm... wonderful writing once again Elizabeth!

Oh, me too Elizabeth!  You've penned your wonderful memories of this haven beautifully.
I have yet, to do my little haven justice in words, but my little island at our old cottage in Muskoka (northern Ontario) is where my mind always will drift to (I used to canoe or swim out there and just sit for hours).  I wanted to always be able to visit it visually, so I even pieced together a moving panoramic image that took 7  old photos to splice together; now I can drift back to my island as often as I want ... sigh ....

I thought I'd share my link to it with you ... it will take only a short bit to load. Thank you for taking me there yet again, through inspiration of your lovely journey Liz.

Best wishes,
/Kit

PS. Sorry for rambling Liz - I got carried away!

Liz, the beauty and eloquence of your thoughtful verse always amazes me, yet I do not doubt, each time that I happen upon one of your poems, that I will be mesmerized with lovely images and ideas by what you've written. This poem is stunning, and reminds me so much of my home, and how grateful I am to be able to live among such striking evidence of Nature's benevolence. Thank you for sharing this here.
