sad little faces
   hungry haunted eyes
      ignored by passersby

tattered shoes and
   oversized jeans scavenged
      from others trash

she holds his little
   hand in hers and
      keeps him close to her

they are all they have
   each other
      since mama ran away

she does the best she
   can to feed him
to keep him warm and dry

but each day it
   gets harder and harder
      to face his crying eyes

trying to keep him safe
   trying to smile and sing
hes only four shes only seven

sad little faces
   hungry haunted eyes
      ignored by passersby

~My oh my oh my Paula,...this is a very affective piece of writing. It has hit me in the heart,...hard. WoW. A truly tragic observation to write about. You've done an amazing job with this. Take care. *Peace.

Spitfire...children are our future...to let even one slip thru the cracks is the worst kind of failure.

ladysixstring...yes kiss your kids hold them tight...there but for the grace of God.

Mark...you know the place children hold in my heart...and this should rip

Oh Paula, this was so heart wrenching. I too have a very special place in my heart for children. This was very moving and so real.

Paula,

This one reminded me of my father's life growing up as a child during the Great Depression.  He'd often speak of those days.  This is very good work, and so sad...

Wow, so sad yet so true...you know it's not so much that this event had to happen per se..but the fact that many homeless people in general just live this way...truly is sad..thanx for sharing.  This is good

Oh Paula! you have found my soft spot with these words, you have touched me deeply. Indeed children are our future and they should be nurtured and protected at all costs!

God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know it's me. ~Unknown

Paula, Paula, Paula
This was just so very sad. I could picture these children so well and all the machismo I thought I had left me when I shed a tear over this one.  Imagining my two children in this same plight only made it worse for me.  I had to go give them a hug and kiss and tell them the daddy would never leave them.  Now I need you to pen something more joyous, something that will make me smile and laugh.  I need my machismo back.

Paula~
You know I share your misery over this subject.
When they cannot choose ... how sad.
Poverty's children are in every community ...
when do we help ?
Easy to shed tears over them ...
takes passionate compassion to reach out and help them.

Thank you for sharing this tender piece of your heart.
Bless you.
