Little flower girl,
With flowers in your hair
Selling flowers on the street
But noone seemed to care.
You'd plait them into crowns,
Those flowers that you sold;
You might've been a poor flower girl
But your heart was purest gold.

Little flower girl,
Selling flowers in the park;
Tip-toeing past the sleeping winos
Walking until after dark.
With you basket full of flowers,
Wilted flowers five days old,
You might've been a poor flower girl
But your heart was purest gold.

Little flower girl,
Found dead on the street.
All her change was missing
Broken flowers by her feet.
They found the man that did it,
Who left you bleeding in the cold.
And though he took your life he left
Your heart of purest gold

Ali, this turned out sad
I love the ending to this though...left your heart of purest gold.
Great writing!

So sad... Maybe you should invite this guy to your house... "welcome mat" and all!!  Well, I'm off to find a happy poem to cheer myself up... no choice... I'm out of tissue and my sleeve is getting wet.

Reminds me that beauty is needed in a world of ugliness, in poetry, our deeds, our compassion and our empathy.
A wonderful piece.

OMG, that hurt... so much.. so sharp... I am now filled with feelings of disgust...

What a great poem this is.... so well written... highlighting real ugliness and cruelty of life...

LadySix and Marge: Thank you both.  This wasn't originally meant to be a 'tear-jerker', but it kinda wrote itself.

Irish Rose: I totally agree with you, and thank you for reading.

Sudhir: Yes, it highlights the ugliness and cruelty of life, but also the untarnished soul of innocence.
