(sonnet form rewrite of 4/98 poem)

Back on the bike, am I getting old?
Spring's here again, my body's complaining
Joints all are creaking as o'er hills I rolled
Up to the top, my calf muscles paining.

Ten full miles done, was it always uphill?
Wind blows in my face it is no surprise.
One more thing I know - I'll take two Advil
What needs doing now: get over that rise.

A long drink of water cool and refreshing
Did the wind shift round? Did the grade change down?
Rolling and cruising thoughts coalescing
Must be second wind I thought with a frown.

Days later I'm out, twenty I'm cruising
Fifty tomorrow, no thoughts of bruising.

I can completely relate to this... at age 32 I signed up for Taekwondo.  I know that's not terribly old... but there were so many days in the begining where I felt my "lack of youth" bekoning me to come to my senses and high-tail it out of there.

Well, I stood my ground and mind over mush (okay, I wasn't quite that bad) I preserved.  Side note... I was promoted to Blue Belt last night!

All this major wordage just to say... hey!  I really like this one.

age is just a number - so they say - but sometimes one becomes very much aware of how the years take their toll. - butr the exhileration of life keeps me alive and going for all the gusto I can manage ~S~ Thank you

Will, very good, its too bad our bodies can't always feel as good as  they should. I hate getting older too, but trying to cope.  I guess this one will serve as inspiration.
Thanks.

Hi Bill--I'm great on a bike on a straight-away or down hill...but give me a itty bitty hill and.... I'd rather be dancing.  Enjoyed the poem!

Sorry to be so slow with this response - I've been away from PC - on vacation at the shore of the Chesapeake.

CatalinaMoon-
What Iwrote was true 2 years ago - but equally true every spring since I restarted riding as an adult (circa 1976)

Martie-

Dancing can be great aerobic exercise too
but on balance - If I've a partner - I'd rather be dancing slow and getting my exercise pedaling with a breeze blowing the sweat away ~G~
What kind of dancing did you have in mind?
