Anticipating Mr. Lightfoot [A Tribute]

There's a message to the wind
that such I am longing for
all I'm after is to be
Alberta bound for sure

because after that affair
on 8th Avenue
all the lovely ladies
have painted a dim view

but Baby, it's alright,
I'm the true boss man
I'll gather all my broken dreams
and with drifters see dreamland

does your mother know
that I'm your Don Quixote
oh my long haired woman
I'm the one, remember me

O take this song for a winter's night
and take the songs the minstrel sang
does your heart still clench up tight
the night the church bells rang?

If you could read my mind
and lend to me blackberry wine
and know that you were a vision in lace,
the first time I ever saw your face

nay ecstasy was made too easy
and you're as fine as fine can be
I'll prove my love in my fashion
if there's a reason, if you need me.

[I will be the beneficiary of a Gordon Lightfoot concert come August 24, 2000. I have taken the liberty of creating this piece by the titles of some of Mr. Lightfoot's specific songs… some I have heard in my youth, others I hope to hear at this age…all I know is his marvelous voice has always been golden to my ears.  When I heard he was coming to my little town, I was ecstatic! I have incorporated this website for your reading pleasure, for I've always believed he was a true poet, and lover of words, and balladeer true, indeed. And 'Deer, I dedicate this to you.]

Gordon Lightfoot... one of the great singer / songwriters.  Him and Jim Croce... and a few others of their ilk.  Nice bit of work... enjoy your concert... wish I could be there!  Peace!

Folks, excuse me, I had to edit a line... everyone who ever writes needs to have an over-the-shoulder editor...[I have a loving hubby] who saw one line as something that could have been taken "oh so wrong"...so I didn't mean to bump this up to the top by this message, but wanted you to know...I am not taking credit for any of Mr. Lightfoot's works...and I'm keeping it quite clean!!!!

great writing, sunshine!!

love this verse:

"but Baby, it's alright,
I'm the true boss man
I'll gather all my broken dreams
and with drifters see dreamland"

you've done the singer/songwriter a very fine tribute here and i like the style of this... might i suggest either bringing a printed copy to the concert or sending him one by mail?

i've always liked gordon lightfoot, too, btw

You are so right in his awesome talent...I was intoduced to him with the song "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and have been in love with his music ever since.  His guitar especially in his most inspiring ballads his so awesome and his voice his one of pure solitude.  You honor him well in your words and the sensation I got when reading this sent shivers up my spine just reflecting back on his works.  Outstanding.  Going in my library

Sunshine
I can't say that I've ever heard Mr. Lightfoot, but from your tribute, I imagine that he's a very good artist.
I hope he keeps on inspiring you with his voice and use of words.
Great work.

Aw, Sunshine, you touch me deeply with this one. It should come as no surprise to know that GL has always been a favorite of mine. Aside from having a wonderful voice, his words were always so real and portrayed life in a realistic yet sensitive and touching way. If I were able to create some of the songs he wrote, I would certainly be proud, as I'm sure he is....and deservedly so. I appreciate you very much, Karilea, and I thank you for the dedication

Doreen, altruistic hubby that I have, said the very same thing...but he wanted something from it...and all I want to do is make this a tribute...thanks! how can we NOT like GL? LOL...

Mark, shivers? Oh wow, that's great! [I get a kick when someone says something like that...]

Garfield...if you can ever see/hear him, you'll be in for a treat, I promise!...

'Deer, when I first started here at Passions, and read your work, it was ever so easy to draw parallels between Mr. Lightfoot's talents and yours...by the way, just how deep did I touch you? {~,^} All seriousness aside, it is I who appreciate you...

Shamelessly bringing this to the top...tonight I will live and love again in wonderful memories as Gordon plays to us...and I will have brought with me the thought of ALL of YOU here...because his music and poetry so belongs to the World, as it does, indeed, to Passions!

Cool cool cool!

Love the way you did this and I love Gordie a real huge bunch!
He's a good ol Canuck too.
Seen him several times and loved it very much!
