Sleep child, your Mother waits
until your eyes close tight
She wants to do what they say is best
what she knows is truly right.

Giving you away is the hardest thing
she will ever have to do.
She steels herself with one more look
to memorize the whole of you.

She cries in desperation
and hopes someday you'll know
that the agony she felt today is
magnified whereever she may go.

So sleep child, your Mother waits,
seeking strength to walk from this place
tears gathering in her saddened eyes
at one last look at your sleeping face.

Sharon, this is such a sad piece. It has to be terrible to give up a precious gift, but sometimes, it's for the best. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Hello Poet deVine,
This writing has hit very close to home. Very tenderly done, and with many emotions for me. I'm am glad that I read this one.

Thank you all for your kind comments. This poem was written for a dear friend of mine. He was adopted. And though he contacted  his birth mother, she doesn't want to meet him. He's ok with that on the surface, but I know he felt the second rejection! This is his fantasy..that she regretted giving him up....

Deeply sorrowful, but hope is present...that would definitely be a very hard thing to go through...but I suppose sometimes it's the best choice.

Fighting back emotions from this as I was adopted out while I was very young.  I only hope my mother felt at least something of what you have shared here.  Thank you
