A Devil of A Time

Soon the shadows will lengthen
Till morning feels like dusk,
Leaves will whisper and spiral
Shaping unwanted ghosts.

Fires shall lick in autumnal denial
Fueled by dry Diablo winds
Waiting for winter’s abrupt arrival,
Borne on the swelling of heavy rains.

A time of shedding old skins,
Trees become gray and barren,
Death displays its merry wares
As all souls rise from repose.

Carry the candles, steady and slow
Through gateways of the departed
Prayers and penance fading
Under the silent watch of stone.

Don’t stay past the witching hour
Or go to old graveyards alone,
The moon has a way of playing tricks
Aiming blue beams full of screams.

Corinne.....
            Amazing....just amazing....
            I was just thinking about
            Halloween, when I clicked!!
              Loved the poem, right
                down to the old
                   graveyards!

Life is a gift....
That is why they call it
'the Present'!

I've carried a long term love of western canyons, and Anasazi ruins - and your verses brought them vividly to life - Thank you

wandering in graveyards alone might be a scary experience, unless protected by the Goddess of the Fire dance. So i'll be sure to call her forth before going....

Very creative images here Corinne, I really like this one alot.

Corinne~
You reached out and touched a tender portion
of my heart and soul with this gentle render, my friend.

'Carry the candles, steady and slow
Through gateways of the departed
Prayers and penance fading
Under the silent watch of stone.'

Thank you.

Sunny - thank you, was thinking how ready I am for fall to come!

Wilfred, I visited some Anasazi ruins in New Mexico (called Puye) - was a very spiritual experience.  We spent hours wandering in and out of their ancient homes wondering what it must have been like.

Parker, your graveyard poem inspired this, so thank you!  Yes, well, even the fire dancers aren't all powerful!

Tony, - Thank you, was hoping that I would - Muhahahahaha!

Marge, there is a Native American cemetary east of San Diego that I used to visit, they had the traditional All Hallows eve candle procession - always wanted to go but felt I would be intruding where I don't belong!

Corinne,
I hope you don't mind me coming back

I had to reread this one... this time on a stomach full and last night's sleep finally rubbed out...

Absolutely loved this....

Aha!  Another facet of Corinne - like a jewel, everytime you turn, an new glimmer to catch the eye.  I like the flow of this - it held me close, as if to your bosom *oops*.

Why, thank you, Sudhir, makes me happy that you read and commented twice!

LongJohn - kind words brought a smile to my face (ahem!).

Rex, shivering cold it is!

Definitely my favorite time of year.  Wonderful flow that just grapped hold and took me in.  You have done it once again.
