The baby cries at 3am,
   rousing her from her sleep
She glances at the clock,
   then picks her up
Baring her breast to
   tiny lips
She sits in the rocker
   by the window.
Tears slip unnoticed
   down her cheeks
So many nights she
   has sat alone
Nursing her tiny
   daughter
All her friends are
   at school or the movies
Or wherever the fun
   happens to be
But she gets up every
   morning
Kisses mom and dad
   goodbye
Takes her daughter
   to the sitter
Goes to work and
   wonders why.
She works all day
   for minimum wage
Just to provide things
   for her daughter
No getting ahead
   no leaving behind
The pain of lost
   childhood.
Then she looks down
   into that tiny face
So sweet so perfect
   so innocent
Little eyes gaze back
   at her
And a tiny smile
   flickers there.
Is it worth it?
   You tell me.

You present a paradox - how could you say it was not worth it, yet the cost of the little life is at the expense of the mother having a life. Of course it is worth it, but only after the fact i think

wow
a question i know many of us have had to answer...
deep down I think every choice we make and everything we do is worth it, even if it is to learn
