The neighbors dog got out last night,
And ran off in the blink of an eye;
The old man searched all around,
Calling loudly and then a huge sigh.
In the morning, bedraggled, "Bud" came back,
Placed a dead hare at his master's feet,
The old man remembered this rabbit,
As the tame one from down the street!
Not wanting to get into trouble,
He took it and scrubbed it all clean,
Then blew dry the fur on this bunny,
Till the coat had a soft, rabbit sheen.
Then he snuck unseen across the lawns
And laid the poor thing in it's cage,
Ran quickly back to his own yard,
Avoiding his neighbors rage.
Later that day he heard a scream,
The lady had found her dead pet
Always appearing a gentleman,
He went to see if she needed a vet.
The lady trembled, shivered and shook,
She stared down where the rabbit did lay,
Filled with pure terror as she said,
"I buried him yesterday!!!!"
