On the road

0 posted 2000-08-01 05:17 PM

we shut the door on the last way home
just we three walking in the icy night

looking right I see
looming hills through the rain,
darker dark on dark
to the left sodden trees and grassy slope
our home for the night

I could have wished for a female form to cuddle warm
as I rolled in soaking sheets, cold wind-swept and wet

and above, wild trees, ragged brooms, scraped the sky,
whipped to a frenzy by the scything wind

all this in a land of castles squat, dripping grey,
moss-green walls,
welcome home to a million creatures,
shell-covered and shiny dry

so no end to this rain deluging us tattered souls
our misbegotten quest a joke flung in pale faces
we turn tail

all up and off back down the black shiny road
with two wild fishermen singing crazy free
& yellow headlamps flashing the pines alive

back to light, warmth and shelter,
to Morroch, ancestors and red velvet,
tea cups and trinkets rattling
clothes drying steaming hot by the fire
something cooking and music playing
faces glowing in the electric air
happy to be back
survivors of the storm

I agree, this is very lovely....you led me through the wet to the warmth, i felt every bit of it.

Allan, I do love the inter-textual references to your other poems, makes it like a kind of exciting story with lots of instalments that come totally unexpected.
This one really had me there, in the wet, in the cold, in the soggy island night, and in the warmth of "home". Somehow there is nothing more comforting than being inside and warm when the weather rages to its heart's content outside. But I am rambling once more. Brilliant, as always!

I love the title--love the whole poem, but something about the title, it just stuck with me, like something forgotten remembered.
Thanks you for this reverie, allan.

Your reader traverses and sleeps through the freezing, stormy night right along with you in this piece, and then basks in the warmth of kind shelter ... all through the skillful wielding of your words. This is the kind of poem one "feels," thanks to your keen crafting.
