Your Spirit Lives On

I remember the day I met you
The contempt I had in my heart
The other woman in my eyes
I closed you out from the start

I no interest in this new “family”
Pain controlling my emotion
I was expected to accept you
But I could only deny the notion

As the many years passed us by
I slowly opened my life to you
Discovering who you really were
Not the person I thought I knew

To my surprise, we got along
Talking about so many different things
I began to learn to respect you
Making memories worth keeping.

Just as I was getting to know you
You were taken from our lives
I couldn’t believe you were gone
Pain in my heart like a thousand knives

I think of all the time that I wasted
And I hope you know how much I cared
You spirit will always live on
Through all the memories that we shared.

This is a poem dedicated to my step mother. She passed away two years ago just as we started to form a strong relationship.  I regret the time I spent turning her away, but I know she knows I loved her.

...well it sure deserved the bump, rp.
what a strong piece of work.  I'm sure we can all relate to the wasted time...
At least you know she knew, and that's what matters the most, right?
  cheers to you,

as a (step) father I can feel and know what you and your step mother went through
I am lucky tho as my kids (I don't think of them as step childern)know I love them all as my own
I am sure she was always there for you no matter what

Zion - Yes she always was. I just didn't realize at the time.  She was a saint to put with me the way she did when I was younger...~chuckles~  I didn't make it easy.  I'm glad you liked the poem

I am sure she knew and the fact that you were able to make some memories you cherish will forever be your grace.  Wonderful write.
