If I write a 'period' piece...let's say a Midieval story, should I write with a dialect of that time? If I use proper grammar am I detracting from the 'feel' of the period?

Yes..for instance in the story I'm working on....it's set in a 'medieval' type time..I used the word impetus in it...and NO dialects...though I think they would use them...but then sometimes that detracts from the story...sigh.........I am just going to write it and then worry about it.

okies.

Why don't you write it without dialects..then write another version with dialects - then compare the two?

Or maybe without dialect from that period except now and then...

I would say that writing in the dialect shouldn't be attempted unless you have a good idea how the dialect was used in that period. . . now, I know that I use some "Thee's" and "thou's" in my own writing sometimes, but if your're going to use the dialect as dialogue, then you need to have an example to work from. . .
