yes great sharon - now, following on from what i was saying lets make people contribute and think and hopefully learn at the same time.

FIND YOUR OWN WORDPLAYS

each person must find one or two or three wordplays along the lines of those sharon has posted and submit them.

probably best to keep them in this thread or it will get too cumbersome ......:

here are mine:

tenon - a projection in a piece of timber to fit into a mortise

tendon - white tissue connecting muscle and bone for example

a mortise - socket in timber (for example) to receive tenon to form joint

amortise* - to provided for the gradual extinguishment of a lump sum (usually borrowing)

* US spelling "amortize"

flair -talent

flare - to burn with an unsteady blame, to open or spread outwards

fleur - as in "fleur-de-lys" - literally lily flower, french "flower"

Okay here's mine:

CORES, CORPS, CORPSE

Apples have cores.
A corps is an organization, like the Peace Corps.
A corpse is a dead body, a carcass.

WEATHER, WHETHER, WETHER

The climate is made up of "weather";
whether it is nice out depends on whether it is raining or not.
A wether is just a castrated sheep.

BREATHE, BREATH
When you need to breathe, you take a breath.

My contribution:

beer/bier

You hope someone brings this to a party/funeral.

wine/whine

There are fine wines but no fine whiners.

lager/logger

After a busy day in the woods, the logger grabs a frosty lager.

PhiLLip  - Not everyone is a seer! So your impatience just might sear their sensibilities, leaving them feeling sere just because you wrote yours quickly (perhaps something you’d learned by rote?). We all know our role here, so let’s just let things roll along without a designated layout. Instead, let’s just go lay out at the beach and say bad thinks about K. Cool?

Chris

PS - GREAT job everyone - I'm impressed! Careful though, someone might start assuming we can think or something...

HELL - something you end up in if you do

Elyse - I'm with you in that boat - I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must be for people to learn as a second language!   Good examples!

-AND-

I have another one!!!

Philip - Kinda boring, stuck-up, arrogant (British) sounding name. *yawn*

PhiLLip - Good, strong, AMERICAN sounding name. Fit for a spry young lad. *so-so*

Phiip - Hip, with the times, not afraid to wear his underwear on his head kind of guy. Willing to take a risk, and doesn't worry about the rain streaking his mascara. Now that is the kinda guy I dig!

first we'll just dispose of the frivolity:

Phiip ........ FINE ..  if it gives the terrible twosome thrills to corrupt my hitherto unblemished name who am i to complain - i mean it's only MY name after all ..     oh and by the way, you missed:

FILLIP -something tending to arouse or stimulate ~smirk~

BIPAND(C) - please tell me this a typo and that you actually meant it to be a sexually ambiguous black and white bear-like mammal normally found in China eating bamboo shoots

next, i need to mention that the thread is drifting off course:

if you go and examine sharon's original post you will discover that that point she was getting across is that there are SIMILARLY spelled words which are often confused in usage, NOTE "SIMILAR" not identical - the idea is to try and help people write correctly.  Everyone knows that "bow" and "bow" have different meanings, but you can't of course tell that I might have (in my thought) used it incorrectly because on paper it looks the same.

so we're NOT  looking here for words of identical spelling that have different meaning, we are rather looking for words which to the ear SOUND identical (or nearly so) but do in fact have different meanings and spellings......  sooooooooooooo .....

Elyse
Maree
and (I'm delighted to say ..heh)
Lady K

need to revisit the exercise - please try harder - heh heh ....I'm rather enjoying this schoolmaster thing ......

by way of a further example:

RHYME - correspondence of terminal word sounds

RIME - frost, specially that that builds up on the windwards side of objects ie wind-driven granules

back to the drawing board you three, quite foolin' around and let's have some serious work here

P

PS - to LK ..ok i accept - hostel and hostile are a good example ..two more please

extremely amusing christopher (lol- it was actually  ) ...... but now i think its time to do a deal - how's about a mild form of ribaldry in this forum reserving the real action for the Alley where we can't frighten people away (coz they are all weirder than us in there...lol) ...... and meanwhile why don't you exert your undoubted manly charm, wit, and persuasiveness to try and encourage a few brave souls into this den ...marilyn would be a good start seeing as she seems to be thirsting for punishment ..er i mean learning (oops ..i said i'd be good didn't i..) ..

i look forward to a forum full of intelligent replies when i wake up tomorrow ..
