I'm sorry, Ms. DeVine...

The only thing my inferior dictionary says is a 'slash'....I'm sure there is another name for it but I don't have a clue!

Personally I think / is an annoying little thing that turns into a question mark out of habit or occasionally even a . or a >...

But I wandered off to Ask Jeeves and it is, as Marge(y) says, a forward slash.

This (/) is called a Virgule, and like you said, it's used to seperate ideas.

But it's also used to seperate alternatives, replace the word "to" or "and" between related compound terms (May/June), divides run-in lines of poetry, divides fractions (1/2), represents "per" or "to" when used with units of measurement (9ft/sec), and sets off phonemes and phonemic transcription (/b/ as in "but")

Hope that this helps!!!

Okay .... how could this tiny little
mark  /  have so many names ????
It is also called a separatrix, an oblique, and a solidus.

My goodness !  How much I've learned
from one simple little question.
