The bad news is, ya'll seem to be confusing poor English with dialect (which us here Cajuns know a smidge about).

The good news is, youse dialects are pretty bad, too.

ROTFLMAO @ RON!
I AIN'T GOT NOT NOTHING ELSE TO SAY, except.....
hey..since this is and english workshop are we going to work on things like punctuation proper nouns fragmented sentences run on sentences commas periods or anything like that? Wanted to know is all.  Just curious, you know, putting commas, where they don't belong, well, is just plain annoying, because people just LOVE those little commas. I do. any information on these things used in prose would be nice to know of because i'd like to start writing some of that if I could one day.   he he..SORRY!
I just HAD to! I can't shut up for long you know just go on and on and on forever and ever always talking when I should be reading and concentrating on things like writing good poetry.   LATERS!
Glad this place is up. Let me know if I can help in any way at all.

Grammar begins now.  Expain each alternate spelling and each dialect you wish to command. If you can't, you are wrong.

Well....*blushing*..I would like to learn how to use a semi-colon properly. My English class days are long since gone and I forget. Proper sentence structure is something I would love to have a refresher course on as well.

ROTFLM'D'O...

For Marilyn...

Semicolons are used to separate independent clauses within the same compound sentence, when they are not joined by conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for); the clauses should be closely related.

Semicolons are particularly appropriate if there are commas within the clauses, or one clause begins with a parenthetical expression such as "for example".

They are also used to separate items in a series if the items contain commas; for example, we'll post special poems on Saturday, January 1; Monday, February 14; and Sunday, April 23.

YIKES!!!.. Don't be makin' me think on a Sunday; it's my R&R day...
btw - I always use that silly dash instead - using my poetic license here... and stuffing a rag in my mouth (not on my Toe) - this Ain' My Forum...!!!

Michael... quit drawing on the wall and go stand in the corner! Misticman, you do the same... no Misticman, the other corner, you two obviously can't play well together!

Nan, please leave my butt out of this and worry about your own! As far as this not being your class... well in a way it is! Please see the thread "Do I Know How To Ramble Or What?"

Umm... who let the Justin's in here? Hmm? Who told them? It was supposed to be kept secret from them! I haven't got my Psychology degree yet, so I'm not authorized to give them an electrical shock treatment yet!

Oh great! And we have to deal with one of 'dem foreign Cajun people's too! Geesh! They're sure to warp everyone in here! Next thing you know, we'll all be running down the bayou chasing alligators for breakfast or sumthin'!

Ouch Brad... that hurt!!!

Temptress, calm down hun... no one's going to hurt you I promise...

And finally, SCG - I already had a forum! Geesh, some people!   Now I have two...hehe, I get to warp twice as many people!!! I love having the ability to abuse power!!! Hahaha

You expect us to write good poetry and use good English, too..?  I think, sir, that you have teetered well over into the boundaries of lunacy, even compared to your somewhat eroded norm ...

Well, while ya'll are in here sweating and swearing over proper use of language, I'll be in the corner misplacing my modifiers and dangling my participles -- hehehe.

PS:  ya'll (n):  Contraction of "ya" and "all," used primarily to refer to a person or group of persons in the southern United States.

Well, I'm glad everyone enjoyed my little joke there. Next time, I'll try to do something like that on purpose.

I guess no one is afraid of correcting my mistakes, now, are they?

Or making fun of me?

Or hurting my feelings?

Thank God, no one is afraid of doing these things to me.  Attack, attack, no holds barred and that kind of thing.  Now, we can have some fun.

Brad

Nan,
I knew you cared.

But really my point (I've had a very bad joke week, I admit.) is that grammar and spelling are far more difficult than a simple rule book.  Grammar and spelling are dependent on logic and convention (and the two don't mix very well). We must admit this, we must accept the fact that nobody knows it all, we must accept the fact that we all make mistakes (and given my ego, you have no idea, how hard that is.).  We have to talk and not be afraid of making mistakes.

I was talking to a fellow teacher of mine who was arguing 'delagable' versus 'delegatable' and the fact is both are logically possible (he was arguing logic on this one and I eventually showed him that on that level, both are possible  but on a 'feel' level we agreed.).

Grammar is a vague and for the most part unknown subject. The only way to discuss this is to talk and talk and talk (without egos -- God, it hurts to say that) and take our lumps the only way we can. The more honest, the more we lean towards true learning, the more we gain from these discussions.

And that means all of us,
Brad

And with that said, I think we should close this thread... heaven only knows how many minds we've warped with this terrible grammar and these painful dialects!
