Survival

Please prepare your hearts
For the things Iím going to say
For my words may not be pleasant
You may turn the other way

I would like to sing a song
Of the place where I have been
Where life and death are one
And where killingís not a sin

I have just come from the north
Where the desert lands extend
Where a childís not a child
And a friend is not a friend

I have lived in an illusion
There was love upon the earth
But I just came from a place
Where a human has no worth

If you donít believe my song
I canít look upon your face
I'll just pick up my guitar
And sing this in a different place

Survival is the only word
That they know how to say
They are living just to die
And theyíre dying every day

Every momentís filled with hunger
And each night is filled with fear
Every dream must be forgotten
Every eye must shed a tear

I have just come from the north
Where the flowing waters end
Where a child is not a child
And a friend is not a friend

Do not say that I am crazy
Foolish words I can't forgive
For my heart has witnessed truth
And I'm now learning how to live

Liz, so many of us live within our rose colored glasses.  You take your pictures with an encompassing lense.

Liz

As always your work is simply beautiful. you speak with such poetic sincereity and honesty in this piece. and you view the world seeing the whole picture, not just bits and pieces like some of the rest of us do. i admire your gift of writing but also i admire the way that you so willingly share your deepest feelings/emotions here with us at Passions. This was good girl! Keep it up!

Take care.

To explain this poem, (someone just e-mailed this question) it was inspired by true stories that I heard first hand from people who migrated out of the Sertao (desert)in northeast Brazil to escape the annual drought. In some regions, every man carried a gun and there was a lot of violence, and famous bandits became national heroes. This was many years ago

Thanks Elizabeth for the explanation. I thought it was inspired from your days in Brazil but I wasn't positive. This is excellently written and very powerful in its effect.

Elizabeth, dear friend~
You told this with tremendous
grace and respect for the tales
of Brazil.
I admire your versatility.
Wonderful work.

Liz, I'm not sure what to say here. This makes one feel so many emotions when reading it. Compassion, hurt, sadness...it's exquisite!
