The Sweet Guitar

He was the greatest of the great
A master of the strings
The strains of his DeGeorgio
Took flight like angel wings

He rode on horseback into town
And strummed his sweet guitar
They came to dance and hear him play
From villages afar

His hands were well accomplished
Though he was still quite young
And she was there to listen to
Each ballad that was sung

A dark exotic beauty
Long hair as black as night
And piercing eyes he said reflected
Southern Crossís light

He felt her eyes upon him
With every note he played
The more she watched the lovelier
The music that he made

One night he pledged his love to her
And made a promise true
If you will give your hand to me
Iíll play for only you

A promise made so long ago
But to this very day
From behind his little ranch house
You can hear the music play

Segovia-like strums float down
From up atop the hill
The moonlit palms stop swaying
And the bamboo shoots are still

And she is there to hear his song
His wondrous serenade
Each night the musicís lovelier
Than anything heís played

He lights a cigarette and waits
The moment to be right
Pleading any cloud to pass
And open up the night

The moment that the moonlight comes
To touch upon the strings
He cradles his guitar
And to his tender love he sings

He gazes up at Southern Cross
While fingering pleasant strums
And she looks down from heaven
As she's done since they were young

The stars shine brighter on this ranch
Than any other place
The master plays and smiles
As starlight shines upon his face

Thank you all for your comments. However I don't think anyone understood that she had died long ago and he was still singing to her as he had promised. So I changed a few words to make that clear. This story is based on a beautiful old Brazilian song.
I see we've got another Lizzie on board.
Martie, you never stop. Just can't keep away from passions, can you?
Thanks again,
Liz

Claire, thank you so much

Denise, Welcome back! Thanks

Balladeer, Very funny, very funny. Thanks for the comments, dear friend

Mike, Now if you had written this, we would have felt the day retreating as moonlight slowly crept across the hills and palms, etc, etc. I just can't write that beautifully. Maybe some day.
Thank you for the compliment. It means a lot .

Liz

very well written...you make it look easy.(smile)
take care, jm

she said I dont know if I've ever been good enough,
and I'm a little bit rusty, and I feel like my head is caving in.
...and I dont know if I've ever been really loved by a hand thats touched me...
and I feel like somethings gonna give...
and I'm a little bit angry.

Elizabeth, dear one~
Tuned to perfection.
Strummings of devoted love
that plays on into the night.
Surely she hears his promise kept.
Beautiful dear heart.
