Stuffed

The ideals of the world today,
the penalty we all pay,
is to overlook the who
and why of our existence.

This picture of grown up life
embedded in us as children
of the dream American,
was it all a huge mistake?

The keepin’ up with the Jones’s
this mania with amassing stuff,
is it really any wonder
why we feel so unfulfilled?

Wasn't it supposed to be above love?
About taking care of each other?
About giving? The golden rule, all that?

Pondering this, as my daughter
plays with her Barbies,
and my son plays Pokemon
and I sit here playing with my ‘puter.

Good points made here, Corinne. I for one am not much for keeping up with the Joneses, but it seems today that not everyone has that same feeling. By the way, the ending made me smile.

Its a never ending battle keeping up with the Jones’s. Country life its simpler, Jones’s live further away, family gets closer
.......... On the other hand, city life and the Jones’s gives us something to do, we can beat them.

That last line made me laugh too.

Corinne,
Well put...I loved the end!!  Love is really where the true wealth lies.  You can't buy that.

Great poem, Corinne! Keeping up with the Jones's can be very tiring and unfulfilling.

Good points made here, hon.
Yes ... we've come far ...
but not so far that love can't
come with us.

I think at one point, we had "Game Boy", "Super Nintendo" and the computer going - No one had to relate to anyone else...

This week we've been watching the movie "Little Women" in class.  I've had the kids take careful note that this was written in a time when there was no electricity... never mind any of our modern conveniences... They simply haven't a clue..

Nice job here, Cor...

A thought provoking poem, and maybe one which unfortunately too many of us can relate to

Thank you Denise, Marge, Liz and Tess,
it's something I'm wrestling with at present.
Changing courses in my life and hoping to simplify the material aspects in order to greater appreciate all other aspects. Hopefully, able to pass this on to the kids, but bad habits form early, don't they?

It came to a climax when I overheard three moms in my town exhuberantly discussing a new diningroom set - for what seemed liked 20 minutes!  I thought to myself:  "get a life!" And then I remembered that I too live in this town and that we are a generation taught to pursue the mighty buck, to have the house, the cars, the 401Ks, to give your kids everything the other kids have...

So many good thoughts, here, Corinne and all y'all.

I succeeded, in little ways, in keeping my daughters' lives simpler than most of their friends'.  But, relative to the frugality I grew up with, and was comfortable with, my 2 daughters grew up in a pretty affluent life style.  I have often wondered if I did them a disservice by not mixing a bit more frugality/simplicity into their lives.  But, recently, they've proven my concerns to be largely unfounded.  VBS  I am blessed.  I am blessed, in fact, with 3 beautiful women in my life.

Rick
