Custards'  Last  Stand
~~~
An  elderly  man  lay  dying
the  doctor  said  there's  no  hope
Upstairs  in  his  bed
in  agonies  dread
His  visions  were  turned  to  a  rope
~
An  aroma  he  loved
wafted  up  from  below
Took  his  mind  from  unavoidable  fate
He  gathered  his  strength
rolled  out  on  the  floor
Determined  to  get  him  a  plate
~
With  an  effort  from  god
he  crawled  and  he  clawed
Through  the  hall  to  the  head  of  the  stair
The  smell  that  he  favored
so  powerful  now
He  slid  the  decent  without  care
~
He  paused  for  a  moment
to  savour  the  air
And  gather  his  thoughts  to  the  task
Up  high  on  the  table
just  out  from  the  oven
All  the  goodies  he  loved  from  the  past
~
With  one  last  mighty  effort
he  crawled  to  a  chair
Clawed  his  way  till  he  stood  on  his  knees
He  stared  at  the  spread
said  a  prayer  as  he  pled
Dear  God  give  me  strength  if  you  please
~
His  feeble  old  hand
reached  out  as  it  shook
This  effort  the  last  he  could  make
Then  the  plates  disappeared
and  his  wifes'  face  appeared
... Hands  off ...
These  I  made
for  your  wake
suthern ... I'm glad you liked it
Nan ... you know me well
Poet deVine ... the punch line is best viewed as you're trying to swallow a drink
