Senility's Child
~*Marge Tindal*~

She plays among the memories
lost somewhere in yesterday
Forgetting things in the here and now
yet remembering those far away

Why, it happened on a Thursday
she is sure to say
when telling of the stories
flickering in the dim light of yesterday

Sure that she remembers
the exact day of the week
or that it really matters
when the story she repeats

Forgetful things are not important
until searching just to find
something to remember
anything will do just fine

She tries hard to join the world
on this November day
but it's to hard to remember
the ones that pass her way

Fading in and out
of today and yesteryear
When she can't remember this minute
she wipes away frustration's tear

A smile of recognition
tugs the corner of her mind
She may be lost in yesterday
but she doesn't think it's this time

When her memory kicks into overdrive
you'll see it in her smile
Don't worry about Aunt Martha
for she is senility's child

Marge, You have a talent to bring create wonderful works of art. It is a sad situation when our relatives fall into this childhood playground they find, but I think it's what keeps them alive for today in their yesterdays. Great job here as usual.

Marge,
This work should travel to all corners of the globe, and be framed and hung in every rest home or elderly care facility. You have captured senility in a light we seldom consider. "She tries hard to join the world", these words and the whole poem spark a tear of awareness of senility from the other side of the window - looking out.
How wonderful, Marge

Hon, sometimes their 'playground' can be more fun than facing society's reality.
Thank God for the memories they have.
I appreciate your reply.

Elizabeth, my friend~
Yes, the light of senility burns the brightest for those locked in it.
I had to go 'inside' her mind to
pen this one.
So much do I appreciate your thoughts
and observations.

May all the 'Aunt Martha's' in the
world be safe and content in the
playground of their memories.

You are so blessed to have your grandmother remember you ... and I'm sure she feels the same.  Bless you.

Hoot~
Yes, senility and Alzheimer's are so
closely related.  Senility seems a little more serene than the clinically-diagnosed Alzheimers.
But, sadly, both hold loving souls captive.
Bless you for your caring.

*Hugs* to all of you for responding and understanding this piece.

Wonderful and loving view...Marge, of couse from you!

Her fingers tremble now
as she cradles baby time
and the rocking rhythm inborn
gentles sorrow as she forgets
the unessential sequence of events
and calls me by my mother's name
and my child by mine
and then herself a child again
waits to be unborn.

(written for my grandmother)  Thanks for reminding me of her beautiful soul!

You touch me so deeply.

Thank you, hon.
How gracious you are.

Terry~
Thank you for the HUGZ ...
they are greatly welcomed.
Sweetie, just remember to try to
visit her in her world instead of
trying to bring her into today.
It's so important to them to know
that we care where, in yesterday, they are.
Bless you.
Hugs back.

This was so tenderly written, Marge~
My mother was an 'Aunt Martha'... God rest her soul~
Many people did not understand her illness, so they chose to stay away~
The few that remained by her side saw that she was truly a beautiful women-- inside and out~
It didn't matter that her mind wandered~
She could still love and be loved~
Your poem was magnificent~

Love, I am sure your mother - 'Aunt Martha' touched your heart everyday.  Those that didn't take the time to 'understand' were the losers.

I was SURE this poem was about Toe!! All kidding aside, you've written a wonderful poem on a heart-breaking subject. My grandmother went through this. Strangely enough, SHE was happy...it was the loved ones that had a hard time with it. Makes you wonder sometimes. Beautiful writing, Marge.

Vis Ad Libertatum

They did plenty of damage in the strength of their
bye-yon years when in combat youthful ability was ever
poised for any who opposed liberties call to the free
dad-in-law of White Fish Montana told us of
stories in those horrid nights of how
he knew every snoring
soldiers different
sound and was able to
recite imitating each and every one
for us telling how in one particular sounded like a
bomb falling to the ground starting with a long whistling
sound and then Garibaldi’s throat noises ending with a kerflub
blub kerblup..! I guess I’m not surprised though ‘cause I figured
if the enemy had ever heard they later would have run for cover
too as it was best to fear and be alive rather than lie in sleepy
hollow for a time that for the living seems endless now
some forty years later dad’s been smitten with a
stroke yet a new side is come forth from
him as he how plays a harmonica
and whistles hymns bringing
smiles and tears of joy to those
with Alzheimer’s who actually do recall
just such their vis ad libertatum is one I may never
know but I have the stories and well remember how they
go yet troubled today’s dance upon my brow and I wonder
isn’t it possible to eradicate a busy daz grime somehow
without assaulting our complexion with the same
old blood and muddy guts from a
forgotten foreign land.

(vis ad libertatum) Strength for Freedom

For my father-in-law

[senility runs long in my family, I can only pray]

WhiteDove~
By all means you send it to
anyone you wish.  If it touches
just one heart .. that's all I could
hope for.

Just for the record ...
if I make it to 90 ..
I'm gonna be a 'little confused' too.
Bless her heart.

Marina~
Just knowing you read and enjoyed
it is sufficient.

Balladeer~
Wonderful point.
We need to concentrate more on
THEIR happiness than our confusion
at their confusion.
LOL@you Re - Toe !

Lucky~
Thank you.
Beautifully rendered, as usual.

Such a tale and one so many of us can relate to.  Brings back the fond memories of my grandfather that was so near and dear to my heart.  What an amazing lady you are to tap into those feelings and thoughts.  Thank you for the reminder and thank you for sharing

This is precious, Marge. My Grandmother and mother both became children before they died, and I found myself thanking God some days that they were able to live in such an innocent world, after all the suffering took so much from them. (both died of cancer) Thank you, Marge, for this.

Isn't it ironic how easily our memories are stirred ... and how hard they try to stir theirs.  So pleased that you liked.

Thank you.
Yes, she's special.
I appreciate your reply.

To become 'as a child' has to be
a little touch of Heaven before we
get there.
The cycle of life takes us back to the happiest days of our innocence.
Glad to be able to share with you.

This is simply wonderful Marge. I feel so sad when I think of the unfair struggle that senility imposes on such time worn soldiers of life.
I have always had the greatest respect for fine gifts the elderly share with thier own and it is sad enough when their body fails them but when the precious gift of the mind falters it is terrible.
This poem touched my heart deeply Marge I really feel it is one of your best.

Lots of love to you take care.....ethome
