(This poem was a long time coming, I only hope I did it justice)

She Dreamed Of Flight (An Acrostic Sestina)

She lived trapped in a gilded cage
Open doors only a dream
Mystical, the clouds for her
Eyes forever on the skies
Transfixed with images of flight
Inspired by her damaged wings

Molted feathers from her wings
Encased the bottom of her cage
She wondered if she’d ever fly
Ever realize her dreams
Venture high up in the skies
Enchanting clouds surrounding her

Night after night, dreams came to her
As she longed to spread her wings
Soft, misty visions of blue skies
Intrigued her there within her cage
Nights haunted by these longing dreams
Gave rise to days with hopes of flight

Lost in images of flight
Each day became a quest for her
Forever reaching for her dreams
Envisioned flight on flawless wings
Avenging life within her cage
Transcending bars to reach the skies

Harbinger to freedom’s skies
Enraptured in her quest for flight
Resigned no more inside her cage
Songs of reproach emit from her
Enticing her to spread her wings
No longer lost within her dreams

Outward now, beyond her dreams
Unleashed, she rises in calm skies
Gracefully on outstretched wings
High in the cloudy air she flies
Taken once, freedom’s now hers
Outside the bounds of her own cage

Far away now from her gilded cage
Life had once been cruel to her
Yet through her dreams, she learned to fly

The poet's job is to put into words those feelings we all have that are so deep, so important, and yet so difficult to name, to tell the truth in such a beautiful way that people cannot live without it. ~Jane Kenyon

*stalking the elusive 'hoot'er through the high grass, pouncing, only earning feathers for this foray*

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!

The message is inspiring, the form exquisite, the acrostic phenomenal.

Hoot, you not only succeeded, but surpassed your attempt at doing this sestina justice.

Bravo! Huzzah! Zounds!

Thanks Sea and Alicat...for those of you who don't have the patience to figure this one out...the acrostic is:

Sometimes even a single feather's enough to fly

Heaven sent on feathered wings,
Owl flies in calm of night,
On whispering winds her beauty sings,
To join her in her flight.

Owl can also angel be,
With heart as pure as gold,
Loving, caring, spirit free.

Romantic as soft taper's light,
Nesting now in morn's first light.

Exceptional poem Hoot... truly enjoyed.

Hello hoot,

Gosh ! What can I say ? I've read almost all your poems in this forum... and each time, you out-do yourself.

May you fly higher and touch the sky, hoot.

Astounding work, Ruth - how could you even think you didn't do it justice?  This is what poetry is all about.

Justice! Justice! You did well, Ruth. You combined a good idea with excellent words in a difficult rhyme scheme and threw in an acrostic for good measure to create an exemplary poem. I admire the work you put into your writing.

Ruth:

I read your sestina earlier but didn't have time to post.  This is a remarkable accomplishment.  One wonders what prompted you to torment yourself so.    If you want to best this effort, Pete (Not A Poet) and I have perfected a double-sestina format.  Let me know. *evil laugh*

Beautiful poem.

I love the acrostic, Ruth!

How charged with punishments the scroll;
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Chandni, Ranev, Pepper, DA, Michael, Balladeer, Martie, Wildbill, PDV, and Tara....thank you all for your support of this one and your wonderful comments. I actually started this poem about 6 months ago and wrote a few lines putting it back for a rainly day that never caame and a bit of inspiration. I'd pick it up from time to time and write a line or to and become so frustrated I'd put it back away again. I decided last night I was going to finish it and picked it up and it all just came together

Jim....I think I'll have to pass on the double sestina thank you anyway   I was questioning my sanity after attempting this one

What does one say to this, Ruth? A sestina is difficult to write.. An acrostic (especially one of this length) is difficult... You've combined them and done a great job of it.  This poem must be one of your most treasured personal accomplishments.  You've definitely learned to fly with a single feather to lift you... Wonderful..

Ruth,
Patience, brilliance, poetic grace, passion, superb phrasing, splendid thoughts, all these woven into a sestina, a beautiful tapestry, a work of art.
BRAVO from one who knows a labor of love.
