On Your Birthday

Pink flowers
Sweet tea.
An April birthday
In a Japanese restaurant.

An auspicious moment-
I drink to you
and your giggling
sloe eyes.

Your hair
comes down
in conversation.
My tuna sushi
now impossible to eat.

Out of the blue
The waiter walks
to a Buddha statue
Bows
Pours tea on its head.
Bows again.
What made you laugh so much?

They say it rained sweet tea
When Buddha was born.
(Not water)
But water fills your eyes.
I can tell that I like you.
