In The Shadows She Waits
                                        by Raven Legros

                         Children of the night

The wind is strong, bitter, quite cold
Its icy breath surrounds and holds
Clings to the girl who walks the street
Although tiny in stature , never weak

Fifteen by face yet much older of heart
For events of childhood tore her illusions apart
She doesn’t dream of boys or impending dates
Her world a corner, she stands, she waits

Hurt by comments that have been said
She’s just trash she made her bed
Her vacant eyes stare of in time
To a mother she remembers, as a child of nine

With her mothers love ,came her fathers shame
Mommy ignored said play daddys game
At night when alone in the dark she would cry
Told no one her secret her face covered the lie

At last she spoke of her torment and pain
Her mother lashed out “you should be ashamed”
mommy he hurts me, I’m asking you why
“your a child of evil, why tell such a lie”

One cold bitter night she ran from his lust
Her mother denied her, there was no one to trust
She stands now in the shadows, your object of hate
As you who pass by, imposing blame as her fate

In silence she screams ,at the passers who glare
“What choice do I have? for some ,life is not fair:
Stolen from me ,childhood dreams of the heart
On this corner alone, I stand in the dark

No one believed me, I was very afraid
No worth do I have, at least for this I get paid.
My clients are those who have money to spend
Husbands and Fathers, that you love and defend

Each, know of my age, yet, they continue to ravage
My body, My soul, yet to you, I am the savage
No longer a child I am a victim, a pawn in a game
Hated by most, to be loved only in shame

So in the shadows of darkness, I stand waiting
                         alone
A face with no name, a child who has not a home
A car now approaches ,from the darkness I’m freed
To dance with a stranger for money decreed

This is my life , tonight, I may die
In the darkness I wait , no tears do I cry
Even in death, blamed am I still, for playing the
                         game
Labeled NHI no Human Involved , a face still, with
                         no name

Is there ever a child who does this by choice
To stand in the shadows To have not a voice
                         NO
Not a child of the night have I ever met
Has chosen this life Yet they try to forget

The judgments and comments of those whom pass
                         bye
Forgetting the child, the victim of every mans lie.

Your poem hits on a very sad subject and you tell the story well--children are always victims in the sad truth of your words and other countless sad stories everywhere, everyday...and tis true that many times the child is blamed...we need to take care of our children so they don't end up on corners like this one.  (stepping off soap box)

Martie

Thank You 4 your words. It is sad how children r blamed 4 the acts of others. This is a true story 1 I know all too well. My hope is that instead of casting these children of pain into the shadows, we instead reach in and help 2 pull them out.

Raven, my friend~
This is tinged with the poignancy of truth.
How well you have told the story of the young victims who are sneered at and cast aside.

This could be our daughters, our sons ... and in fact they are someone's daughters and sons.

Innocence is lost.  My heart goes out to these waifs of the street corner nightlight.
You did them a credible portrayal.

You have written something so incredible here, It was so moving and touched me to the core. My heart goes out to all these children lost to a cruel world that only abuses them.
so very sad
