I can not take
The trash out yet.
It’s raining and
I might get wet.

Besides, I worked
Hard from the start
To build my trashy
Work of art.

I filled the basket
To the brim.
My trash was looking
Mighty grim

I crushed it down
When o'er it ran
To make more space
Within the can.

Because, of course,
I then could fit
More trashy stuff
Inside of it.

But I won’t let
It overflow.
I’ll balance
Everything just so.

That empty box
Can stand on end,
And cardboard stays
With just a bend.

I stuff some paper
Here and there,
Pour on swept dust
From everywhere.

The coke cans and
The garbage fit,
Just so they don't
Fall off of it.

On top egg shells
And coffee grounds
Fill in the gaps
Is what I've found.

The final touch
Is when my toil’s
solidified
With crumpled foil.

I’m proud to say
This skill of mine
For balancing
Trash sculpture’s fine.

I wonder now
If I should stop
Or let it span
The counter top.

The rain has stopped ~
All righty then.
I’ll empty it
And start again.

Nan...

really like ditty's about everyday life like this .... nice!!!

If I may...a small suggestion..

"I crushed it down
When it got full
To make more space
In the barrel."

How bout,

I crushed it down
when oe'er it ran
to make more space
inside the can...

Now Nan...are you really creating a work of art or just don't want to have to empty the trash until you have to? lol. Great piece my friend.

This is really cute, Nan. It is definitely time to discard the work of art when the flies start haning around!

Nan, only a gifted poet could write such a poem from such a topic, or think of it to begin with, or actually do it...you are a true arteeest.  Loved this by the way.

Spray it gold and sell it! I'm sure some 'art critic' would buy it. Then go out and get a trash compactor!!! Cute poem! I love it!

Hi Nan,

The poem is wonderful, so I desided to share it with my girls and of course they loved it too, but the great thing was that they said thats something we do mom.

Thanks for the read,  Cerenity

There is no trash as wonderful
as when the can's no longer full.
Enjoyed this poem, Ms. Nancy Ness.
And now I'll go to bed, I guess,
but not before I here suggest
that some trash cans should hold the best
of empty bottles of champagne.
When I get there, I will explain.

have you ever read "where the sidewalk ends"? reminded me of that childrens book - oh and by the way Nan, I can not thank you enough for pulling me back from the deep Maine woods into the circle once again.

Thank, my dear friends...

infinat3 - Metaphor?.. Mayhaps - but I really did have to break down my sculpture this morning..

L Reb -  Thank you - I was struggling with that stanza... You have contributed to a new artistic genre..

Mar, Cor, Denise, LBL, Martie - I have to confess - It really got out of hand this time... No flies yet, though..

suthern - Geesh - I was looking for a "mausoleum" the whole time..

Michael - Whatever it takes to make you smile, my friend

PdV - I had a compactor - I broke it - Over-filling it..

Rex - Need a job? It pays pretty well

Cer - My girls do it too... I taught 'em well

dp - Scrabpagne?

jbowie - Don't even THINK of disappearing again - It's only a 3 hour drive to go drag you outa there.....

My garbage never looked THAT good!  I'm jealous to say the least!  hehe  I've done that balancing act myself!  This is too funny!  I've learned it's much easier in the long run, to just take it out!!!  Pssst...I love your flies too!   LOL

Deer - I don't think I've ever called your work "garbage".. Have I? I may have said it should be exterminated... but GARBAGE??.. Humph!!...

pFF - Thanks lots - I'm on a whole new venture now - The interesting thing is - No two works of art are alike...

hoot - I tried to sell it to the local "Trash Gallery" - They made me pay them to take it away.. Imagine!

RG - Thanks, but your cats would have to contend with the neighborhood dogs who think they have first dibs on it when I put it out...

WhtDove - Never a dull moment, eh??

Thank you all...

Ok, Nanners, time to hire professional cleaning help....first you won't mow for all the dandelions, now this.  Don't make me fly across the country just to check under the sofa for dust bunnies...

I can attest, it is so
I know she is my mother though
growing up it is true
we built a trash sculpture or two
Now that I am all grown
I fabricate sculptures of my own
but now it is my biggest fear
My trash sculpture it reeks of beer

This is such a cute poem, I really like this stanza

"The rain has stopped ~
All righty then.
I’ll empty it
And start again"

You can interpet that in so many ways...
