My friend Anna's daddy
Had two fingers on his left hand,
A red scar on his tawny cheek.
My father  held my hand tight
As we watched him cut firewood
With his rusty circular saw.
I never saw Anna's mom,
But that day the curtain moved
And I knew she was peeping out.
The cottage was so small.
I'm not sure Anna had a room
Of her own.

Each time the blade hit a log,
I jumped, squeezing my father's hand.
Sharp teeth in harsh vibrato
Screamed  out high notes
Then dropping a harmonic third
Releasing the wood,
Singing the same eerie theme
Over and over again;
Chips were flying.

Father looked me straight in the eye
And said, "You must never
Come here without mom or me.
This is a very dangerous place!"
I nodded.
I understood.

So Anna came down the alley
To play on my jungle gym,
To catch baby horned toads,
Then put them to bed in my dollhouse.
We would swing double
To the rhythms of distant
Whining saws.
Anna would go home
When she wanted to.

One day when I was  alone
My mom sent me to the store
One block away  for candy.
Returning home I went the long way.
I heard no sounds of saws,
Walked down the alley
Past  Anna's house,
Looking for her.

On arriving home
Mother stood
Switch in hand and
Pulling another off the elm.
The sting on my calves
Was like nothing I had
Known or felt before.
Red welts and streaks
Burned all night.
I did not understand
Mother's desperation.
I did not know until
I was older of a danger
Beyond the saws,
Of  Anna's mom and a butcher knife,
Or about that scar
On her daddy's cheek.

Franni

This is one of those works that defies any description short of "poignant"...

WOW!! Franni...this is an excellent piece of writing. The story line is great, the imagery and word usage unparalled, and the rhythm flows to the end. APPLAUDS for a wonderful piece of work

Franni, this caught me, like one of those stories you read when you loose sight of letters and are just there, in the story, watching.  Very well done!
