Musing in the silence of my study-
I’ve been told that “diamonds are forever”.
Maybe…but if people aren’t…who cares if
diamonds last; when the fingers which they graced
have long since become dust?
Forever is an abstract concept. We have no yardstick
By which to measure forever, or eternity.
Some things last a long time: the pyramids… the Coloseum
at Rome…. The ruins of the Mayans. Jerusalem, the Golden.
Some memories seem to last forever- memories of moments of intimacy
Memories of the first time a baby says, “Mamaa” or Dada
The most lasting impressions in our lives are those of sorrow.
A trust betrayed, a heart broken, a loved one’s death. These
are the lasting things. A boy’s thirteenth birthday ruined by
an uncaring parent, a brother’s untimely death… These are the
lasting things. Forever is a long time, but sorrow is longer.
