Sensing the flapping trailing leads of thought
I pull within reach and grasp for control, reigning
back upon the visions that suddenly explode
with vivid colors, painting out a memory upon
a thin ethereal canvass

Trees rustling, their wide green leaves providing
shade from the withering august sun, as below I sit
recalling a time when I was young, playing among
the drifts of snow blanketed grass and ice
encased branches of light

Round sticks of green wood sizzled and popped
as we stood around an open pit fire, warming our
snow ball frozen hands, talking excitedly
about finishing the great snow packed fort
built for our warfare

We were all close then, best of friends who
would spend all day in the glorious snowball wars
before having to retreat from the numbing cold,
stripping our soaked clothes in heaps and sipping
warmth from mom's steaming cocoa

"Where are you", I say to my memories as I
sit upon the warm summer ground, letting my
pen scribe about the paper, as if the words would
bring back those care free moments, which
are slowly fading with time

My reflections are broken by the voice of a young
boy, barely ten and filled with the same
youthful energy I once possessed, asking if he
could go swimming with his friends on the
other side of the lake

"Yes", I say, and before another word can part my lips, he jumps on his little bike and pumps his
legs furiously up and down on the shiny pedals
that clack and clatter, as his spoked wheels
bounce down the old dirt road

Funny, I think, that another child may grow up
thinking of the way his life has turned, still
wishing for another moment of endless snowball
battles, and finishing the fortress built
from the cold wind blown snow

But for now, he continues to play, as I sit
against this tree and think of my friends
that moved away for college or just lost contact,
trying to recall the names to match with
their swiftly fading faces

They I will miss

 A real man
kisses his children goodnight

I love this. I think we all tend to leave those childhood friends behind...unless they were only in our mind...seems my childhood friends were the ones I made up and they are still with me...

James~

What a picture of nostalgia you painted.

'Where are you", I say to my memories'

Awesome thinking.

Mr. Bowie - This is a fabulous piece...I too, sit at times and wonder where in the world my life has gone?  My memories, my past, my happiness in days gone by?  Why wasn't I smart enough to grab all these things and somehow keep them deep in my pocket, so as to not lose them...??  Sigh....Well, thanks anyway for sharing this poem.
BTW - Sorry for biting you back there on Mike's post...I'm a bit fiesty and edgy of late.     Another BIG sigh.....I do understand your point.  Just amazed I guess that someone in here doesn't know the whole deal!  It's been so darn public ya know?  Geesh.....Glad you missed all the mud slinging if you did.  I've had my shots, don't worry.
