           Such Sweet Sorrow

You're leaving, this home for good
the time has come, I know you should
for now you must play life's game
nothing for me ever be the same

The time with you I hold so tight
sheltered and loved you thru the night
time and you are now in the past
memories of you to forever last

Of the past desparately to hold
to the future you charge so bold
a freedom I long thought so fine
I cherish years now left behind

Trying to hold you in loving hands
you slip away like drifting sands
you now depart intent to leave
but to return, I shall believe

I will, I must not hold you back
your presence now my world to lack
not to be strangers this I know
out the door to college you go

I love you with all I have within
greater than any that's ever been
for my son you now leave this home
on your own this world to roam

Danny, you've written this poignant poem  straight from your heart, haven't you? It must be so difficult, and yet, something we must do, and "want" to do for our child, when the time comes for them to make their way. I'll be writing one like this of my own in about four more years...sigh... Hang in there...

Very sincere and heartfelt, I can see you love your son alot. Maybe you should give this to him as he is leaving for college? Just a thought!

Very tender and loving poem--I wrote one like this for each of my sons and they treasure them...as I do them.

Very nicely written Danny.  I sure this will be something he will look back on in years to come and smile.

Danny~
Tugged at this mom's heartstrings.
Recalling the tears I blubbered ...
and the light that I kept burning
in the window.

After four of them ... you'd think it would
have gotten easier .... NOPE !

Wonderful poem from a loving Dad.

Danny,
This was a touching poem, my heart went to you in your fight to let your child go but wanting to keep him near...needing you.  My own children are still young but each day I see them needing me less and less and each triumph for them is bittersweet for me.  God bless you and the fathers like you.

Like you said Danny sweet sorrow
This was a sad but sweet piece I could feel your longing to hold on but also your need to let go.
LoL Tracie (don't worry if I know boys he'll be back whenever he needs his washing done).

Having no children, I can't even empathize with the feelings portrayed here. But I will say it's nice to have some insight on what it must have been like for my parents!

This is fabulous...I started reading it wondering where it was going....I could see several possibilites....but then you wrapped it all up so nicely at the end!  Bravo!  Last year I was with a man whose daughter was off to college, and I saw his pain....I can relate to this well.  I think he felt he was losing his whole identity when she left...Wondering what to do from here...?  Powerfully spoken and in beautiful form.  Thanks for sharing.
