Whatever led me to a life so empty?
One where I am but never will be.
I act as others deem I should
I have done all that I could

I treat others with respect and kindness
They ignore me as if suffering from blindness
I obey and respect the golden rule
But others only treat me like a tool

Using me for my intelligence
I go against my common sense
And help them with what they need
My obligations to them I always exceed

Then why am I left so empty and hollow?
Their lies I constantly swallow
Believing they want me around
When I need them I hear nary a sound

I am a helping hand to those who need one
Yet I can't help but feel it is I they shun
Rejected from their world of greed
Unless of course, it is help they need.

Don't feel so alone in the world, I can relate to this one!  All I can say is keep doing the right thing. For what goes around comes around.  Keep on keepin on! Keep helping.  I so can relate to this, I could swear you took this out of my head!

Mistik: being in the security industry, I am everything to everybody...everything that anyone needs...I have to be, it's my job. I get a certain happiness out of helping other people. And when there is no one there when I need help, I try not to wallow in the hurt, but just try to think that everyone thinks I'm strong and I usually take care of things myself. It's a lonely feeling, I know.

Sometimes other people see the strong one as one who never needs help.

You've written this well, Mistikman, with bitterness and questioning phrases that get the reader's attention, yet keep the message all your own. Hang in there, dear poet.

WhtDove- Well, the big karma wheel sure does turn slowly... Ugh, I get tired of getting nothing but crap for everything I do. Thanks for reading

passing shadows- Thanks, and yea, I generally feel good when I am helping someone, but I feel incredibly bitter when no one comes when I need help. I wonder why I even try at times.

Meadowmuse- Thank you, and I plan too, not much else I can do, is there?

I have felt as such in my life.  If it's possible to be too giving - well I am right there with you.  Still, it's not something I would readily change - for the shame in it is not yours, but those who take advantage of your kindness.  Don't let anyone steal the person you are deep within, Mistikman, lest you do become truly hollow.

Michael- I just keep hoping some day someone will see me for who I am and actually take an interest in me, rather than the other way around. Its not that they arent there when I need help as much as it is they arent there period when my presence doesnt benefit them in some way. Thanks

Beautiful and heartbreaking.  Makes you wonder if making others happy is what you do while loosing yourself or if making others happy is how you find yourself.  I loved your poem and your truth.

Look at this as a power builder....I mean you know why they need you and you are in control now in the knowing.  Doing good deeds to those who do not care is the same as giving pearls to a swine.... They will only stomp them till they are destroyed and get you dirty while they do it.  Do not give what you can not do without and you will never be disapointed.....and save the best for those that truly deserve your best.  It gets better....but it sure takes a while to get there.  Your poem was written with great feeling...and you share it well with your words.  Well done

Butterflies_dont_cry- I would have to say lose yourself at this time, as none of it has helped me find myself in the least. Thanks for reading.

First__Knight- Yes, but unlike pearls, I can just keep giving help, and one time, when I think they are not deserving, they very well may be, and I would miss a golden opportunity. I cannot let my failures so far make me so bitter that I discriminate on who I help. I give my best to everyone, because I can never be totally sure who deserves it and who doesnt. Thanks for reading.
