Sorrow Sleeps Quietly

Sorrow sleeps quietly beneath these sheets
It has taken its place here between
The imprint, still warming, shadow's shape of my love
And my own restless form fraught with dream

'Twas death's calling lullaby that stole him away
'Twas a voice of no tide or concern
For a love that rebirthed my young heart every day
'Twas a song that no scholar could learn

Though our kisses grew longer each time of depart
His return I would always embrace
Until then, with morning's fresh coffee and news
I would gaze on my love's handsome face

But a price tendered then for the love we had known
Though we lived with the threat day to day
His dedication to truth and to justice for all
One sudden act flashed my love's light away.

And nights like the last, as I reach out my hand
And touch, tender, the place where he slept
I cannot but wish that this lullaby's lace
Could now dry the bitter tears I have wept.

Dear LadyClaire

Claire, this is tradgically beautiful...
you write with such a grace and gift, even your pain is a beautiful expression...Im sorry for the loss this poem speaks of.
take care, jm

 ...every moment of every day...
your still with me in every way.
every poem and song...
every rhyme and verse...
your still here...like a beautiful curse.

I could feel the sorrow as my own as I read this Claire. I'm sorry for your loss. I knew living with that threat day to day as my father was a police officer. Seeing him come up the walkway was always an inexpressible relief. This is very well written, Claire.
