Sitting here
staring at a half
empty bottle
of some cheap whiskey I bought
to make myself feel brave...

Cigarette smoke in my eyes
making them feel tired and dry...

(or maybe that's from the bottle??)

I sit here
Wishing, that somehow my life
has been...
different.

Wishing, that somehow my life
could be...
changed.

(Turning up the bottle again....)

blowing smoke rings.

I look into the other room
and see you laying naked in my bed
on old dirty dry-rotted sheets...
I wish I knew who you are...wish
I knew your name...wish
I could remember how I met you last nite...
and wish I had never met you wherever I was...

I wonder how we made it back here?

(turning up the bottle again)
staring deep into my life through the bottom...
(cheap whiskey is a darn good magnifying glass...)

Realizing it doesn't really matter...
you'll be gone when I wake up again.

She replies!

I pretend to be asleep
But see you in the corner of my eye
Drinking, smoking and I’m sure
Just a little high

We had a little fun
Took away the pain for me
But now I wish for something
Something that’ll never be

At first I was excited
I thought maybe you were the one
Then realized that you
Were only in it for the fun

So I let myself be used to feed
your lonely ego tonight
Now I lay on sweat stained sheets
Knowing it wasn’t right

I wait for you to nod off
Into your whiskey slumber
So I can quietly dress and go
Without leaving my name or number

As I tiptoe from your place
I glance back at your bowed head
Wishing I knew your name
Wishing words better unsaid.

*in a quiet awed voice* DAMN!!!!

Exquisite 'slice of life' poetry CMGrimm.
And leave it to deVine to create an excellent rejoiner.

If only two people could communicate in real life circumstances as we can through our poety this world would be a much better place...of course...then we would have nothing to write about....

Thank you poet for the wonderfully poetic reply.

Chris.

ChrisG~
Didn't have to have 'one of those nights'
to feel your 'bottled' pain.
Nope, it was all there ...
you write these tales well.

Wow. I have never been in either of those positions but I can relate to the sentiments depicted here. Well done both authors.

hmmm...actually, in my younger year, i had nights like that, unfortunately.  Of course, PdV's interpretation I experienced before yours.  Sorry to say.
Loved the poem, and welcome back. I had been wondering what you were up to.  Looking forward to reading more once again.
