Who ever thought we would wonder
If our children were safe at school?
Who ever thought a six year old
Would break God's Golden Rule?

Where does a child of this tender age
Even begin to find a gun?
And how does he know how to load it?
Can he begin to know what he's done?

The innocence was lost today,
It seems everything's gone wild,
Another community grieving today -
At the hands of a little child.

My thoughts and prayers to Mt. Morris Michigan

BSC~ I too have given this much thought. This was one of the strongest reasons why my husband and I decided to home school our children. Children of any age can get a gun from irresponsible adults. This world has forgotten their children. They allow violence to be watched on t.v. and in video games.Never mind the music they are allowed to listen to......God was taken out of our schools. That is a big problem! My heart goes out to those hurting. Great poem.-SEA

BSC,
I just heard about this after your responce to my post.
What a sad,sad thing to happen.
I can`t even imagine the pain that the parents of both kids are going thru.
You have done an excellent job at wording such a tragic event.
I have so much to say about guns in the hands of babies.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

SEA & Rufff- Scary world we live in isn't it? We all need to take care of our children and KNOW what they are doing... Sad day when something like this happens

Very nice piece.  This kind of tragedy touches us all.  It's not just the children that are victums, all of us are.  When our society comes to a point when children kill children, are there any sins left?????

What can we do about it? Make the parents PAY! Put stronger gun control laws into effect. I have been thinking about this all day as well. I know what is in my children's backpacks as they leave for school. They have trouble sneaking a small, easily hidable toy past me let alone something the size of a gun. Where was this Mother and Father? They are the ones responsible for what happened today. They are the ones that had that gun in a place where that child could get his hands on it. They, in effect, were the ones that pulled that trigger.

Yes there is violence on T.V. but if you don't want your kids to watch it, TURN IT OFF!! Teach your kids how to settle disputes calmly and without violence. They learn from example. When they kick or hit as a reaction punish them. They will learn what they are taught. WE are responsible for our children. Even legally when they are old enough to be responsible for their own actions. I think we need to look at some of the laws in place and put thing into perspective. When a parent is responsible for the actions of a out of control teen, shouldn't they be responsible for the actions of a seven year old?

I couldn't bear to watch anymore...I don't know the latest details that may have been uncovered. The parents may well be prosecuted, I last heard, if the gun came from home. What if it came from another older kid from the neighborhood? Perhaps the parents are completely innocent as well. The gun was stolen I heard. It very well could have come from an outside source. They can get them anywhere where I live, just like drugs. It is very scarey. I have seen police drive right past drug transactions and do nothing. If I knew what was going on, how can I believe that the police didn't?  I have called the police at times when I heard a gunshot and once when I heard a prowler on my property......nobody came to investigate...I think there are many factors that play into the degeneration of our society. Very tragic indeed. Where will it end? God help us.

Marilyn & dsnyder - Amen to both of you, it's unfortunate that things such as this even need to be discussed, and not only the parents, but the whole community needs to be involved in raising the kids....We can only keep hoping that everyone will learn from the mistakes that have, sadly, been made.

Hey, this is a good poem, but an awful situation. As for home schooling, you may be safer, but you miss a lot of things like making new friend, sports, clubs, esc. And although gun control would be wonderful, it's not going to get to the underlying problem. I think that the big problem today is the deteroration of morals. Many Americans have simply lost their morals, and I see it every day. I am a sophomore in High school, and I just visited my friend in the hospital after having a misscarrage. The father was no where to be found. Every day I see some people my age or younger smoking, chewing, drinking... and why? Because many of us have lost our morals. Well, there's my 2 cents.
