Come under my leaves and let me shade you
Plant yourself next to my heart
For like the sun I cannot touch you
I would burn while giving you life

And when I called out your name
There was no one who really heard me
And I waited but you never came
In my tears I nearly drowned

You can take a leaf and put in your hair
Any garlands that I could give you,
And any fruits for you I bear
If only I could speak and tell you

I grow from tears that I shed,
Even if you think I am dead

Whether appropriate or not, this poem makes me think of one of my favorite authors (no joke!), Shel Silverstein, and his book, "The Giving Tree".  Your poem is really well written, and vacantly sad.  Sigh.  Good Job, and thanks for the memory of one of my favorite reads...think I'll dig that one out and share it with my kids again!

JML, I'm so glad I saw this today! I nearly missed it! I've read it three times thus and with each reading enjoyed it all the more. Absolute beauty...and you wrote this while in high school? *shaking head* My goodness...

Thank you for sharing it with us all these years later!

Thanks Claire! Most of my posts are from that era. I think I see myself getting better, or at least different, changing. I was less cynical back then like everyone else.
I never would have thought someone would read them these many years later. Thanks.

I think it's neat that you've still got poetry that you've written from younger days. I wish I did, sometimes, just to be able to look back and see the progression. (at least, I would like to "think" it's been a progression!) Everything that I wrote while in high school and college (back in the Stone Age) was lost in a fire, aside from a few published works. Be sure to preserve your work as best you can...you never know when you might want to share it, publish it, or just read it again.

Take care,
~ Claire

Wow....this is my favorite of any of your poems I've seen. You've done a wonderful job here expressing your feelings and it's a great poem. I really think you should send this out somewhere. Excellent post
