If I were but a meadowlark,
...I'd fly o'er Kansas plains,
Above ripe fields of golden wheat,
...in gentle springtime rains,
I'd float above the blue-stemmed prairie,
...the Flint Hills down below,
And drift back on the winds of time,
...to see the buffalo,
I'd seek the seven golden cities,
...Coronado's quest,
I'd soar o'er trails to Sante Fe,
...as pioneers went west,
I'd fly amongst the cottonwoods,
...along a shallow stream,
While calling softly to my love,
...you are my life, my dream,
If I were but a meadowlark,
...forever would I sing,
As above the Kansas plains,
...forever would I wing.

I can visualize all that you`ve written about in this one.
Excellent job with the wording Mike.
Thank you for the read

Mike,
I really enjoy reading your descriptive verses of the plains and mountains. This one flows like music, both in lyrics and meter.
This is a beautiful piece

I love these "If I were..."poems of yours--they are magical.

If I were a hummingbird
I'd stand in air so still
with wings that travel like a song
sipping poems with my quill.

Mike...you do know I love these poems right? I don't think I need to tell you that though. They have a way of bringing a smile to my face. Got the next one ready yet ?

If I were but a swan
...With feathers shining bright
I'd drift upon a quiet pond
...Then lift off on wings in flight
I'd have been born an ugly chick
...And grown through years in grace
So in your passing you'd have to stop
...To look upon my face
I float upon the waters
...Arch my neck so long
Preen my silky feathers smooth
...And spread my wings so strong
I'd drift along the waters edge
...As you walked on the shore
Following there in your wake
...Till we were one once more

Very nice, I'd join in, but I know my focus isn't where it needs to be, and YOURS was perfect.

Mike, Hoot Owl, both poems are songs of serene supreme devotional emotion...wonderful work.
