FORGOTTEN PROMISE

He stands upon the precipice
Where once an angel flew.
Who'd given him "maiden's promise"
That love would remain true.

Staring out across the ocean
And down to the crashing waves.
Feeling the mist of emotion
From the memory he saves.

He had loved her, loved her desire,
But it was her own despise.
She held as a shame to her Sire,
In looking from his eyes.

He looked back to the fallen ruin,
Their castle built on sand.
Where by the glow of a lover's moon,
She had refused his hand.

He remembers watching in chains
While she stood upon the ledge.
His screams swallowed by swirling rains,
In her forgotten pledge.

Now the ocean calls him with her voice,
A soft, seductive lure.
A beckoning of no real choice
For love once felt so pure.

As the sun crests the horizon,
In the dawn of a new day.
It's but her memory that flies on,
He just turns and walks away.

All peace within him knowing
Though her echoes may never rest...
Love awaits him where he's going,
He had given her his best.

Michael Anderson

'Tis true, Love lasts forever,
Only her memory slips away.

Your best is all than one can ever give, Michael. Sometimes it's not enough but you can walk away proud knowing you've done it. Good work.

Wonderful words Michael....no one can, or at least should, ask for your best...and if your best isn't good enough for them, then perhaps it just wasn't meant to be. A good relationship consists of each giving 100%, not one 100%, the other less...I hope that ahead of you is all you desire

this one is SO amazing...it was hard to pick which verses caught me the most...
"he" continues to "give his best"...(smile)

It's 3am I must be lonely,
When she says baby,
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes,
Says the rains gonna wash away I believe it.

Grandma Jo, the ocean is one of my favorite places.  There's such a peaceful solitude on the shores out here.  Indeed, it's mesmerizing.

Well said, balladeer...I hold no shame there.

Ruth, there definately has to be giving on both sides...otherwise it's futile.

Janet, I always give my best - even if it's a losing cause.

Denise, Amen to never looking back.  Nothing back there to help.

Claire - your words humble me.  TY

Amy, For awhile, I think Time was standing still.

serenity, Glad to get ya peeking...LOL

Thank you each and all for the kind replies.
