Cords of self-resistance, wind upon my heart,
Like thickened spans of ivy-
Slowly sucking life from my grasp…

Survival depends on compliance-
Surrender to another,
In the age-old dance of Love…

Yet I’m not the docile servant-
To come at beck and call-
I cannot fully give in…

For self-preservation lies thick within my blood.
To surrender would be to lose myself-
As I’ve never done…

So how can you assure me-
That it’s so safe to fall in love?

Beautiful, poignant poem.  I love it.  Yes, scary, love is.  Yes.  Well worded, sharp, strong poem.

LOVE....oh what a tricky business indeed! Can bring such joy and happiness, and yet such sadness and sorrow. You have captured the scariness of love in this poem, quite beautifully. I particularly like the verse, "to surrender would be to lose myself, as I have never done" However I am an optomistic person and therfore don't see love as surrendering, but as sharing. And on that note I'm off to bed   ~Amy~

I'm not sure I'm the best candidate to answer such a profound question...LOL  All I will say is to not fully give yourself to such a wonderful emotion is only robing yourself.  Love is only as true as it is inside of you.  If you're holding back, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Even with my recent setback I can smile because I know I gave everything I could to the relationship and I can appreciate the love I felt.  If I hadn't given all, I'd always wonder "what if"...what could be worse than that?

Devina~
Very valid questioning ...
let me just say that love is ours to GIVE ..
if we are fortunate enough to RECEIVE it ..
then we have reached the pinnacle of emotion.

Only by continuing to give,
will you find the joy in receiving.
The 'safest' way to love is by giving
and not expecting in return.  When it
is returned to you ... then joy is yours.

Marge has indeed said it all. Love is a gift that is given. Treasure it, comfort it, and give it. One can never loose when you give love. When we return home we remain brothers and sisters.

Love GOD and all is good..

Just want to let everyone know, that this is a poem I wrote to appear on the front page of a book I've been writing for several months...It's a futuristic romance, so this woman has been raised on a planet with no men, and taught to hate them, now she's falling in love!!!

Michael, Marge- I think I'll have to add your character names in somewhere along the story with those lovely speeches you made!!!

Thanks to you all!!

Devina: The worst thing about not being here for a short time is you know you're going to miss some great poems...so I'm sat here smiling that you just popped up...

I agree with the others, you can't give half measures with love, it doesn't let you, it's really greedy and demands you give every single little bit of you...well, ok, I'm like that..*g*...I guess it just makes me want to smile when you know you're sharing so much of each other..

I have to agree with Michael (again!). . . you can't love halfway. . . you have to love fully, no matter what the cost. . . because if you don't, you're not only depriving yourself, but the person that you're in love with. . .

What's that old song?

"When somebody loves you,
It's no good unless they love you
All the way. . . "

Love is better given than received. . . I have learned this in my life. . . I'm learning it right now. . .
