WINTER STORM

I’ve walked through many a winter storm
In blinding snow at plodding pace
The road somehow seems longer
When the wind is blowing in your face

Sometimes I turn to look at all
The footsteps I’ve left in the snow
But most of them are covered now
By falling flake and winds that blow

The winter brings a blustery cold
That ruffles up the black bird wing
But look behind tomorrow’s door
And there it is -
The lovely spring

Elizabeth Santos

Did I mention how glad I'm in California?   Liz, I really enjoyed this. It reminded me of my New Hampshire childhood -- the pink faces, steaming breath, snow dust, plows, shoveling, how you don't realize how soaked you really are until you get inside, leaving little tracks of snow all over the mats (which the cat would eat). I'm rambling now; thanks for writing this.

Elizabeth, my friend~
Brrrrrr !  Even with the mild winter
Florida has had so far ... I'm anxiously
awaiting the warmth and beauty of spring.

'The winter brings a blustery cold
That ruffles up the black bird wing'

You did make me want to pull the blanket
around you with the very image of the cold.

Gosh, I'm glad this poem was so visual to the reader, and that you could relate. I think maybe Sy was the only one who understood that I was talking here about the storms of life, looking back on my life, and the fact that the storms always pass.
There's always a spring ahead.
Thank you for the wonderful comments.

The human emotional ups and downs are sort of like the weather Liz, great comparison, and the eternal optimist always anticipates spring.  Sometimes it's spring in the heart in the middle of winter--so lovely your poem.

Thank you, lady poets, for your kind comments. Yes, Martie, a challenge that appears in our lives is like a winter storm and time passes slowly. "the road somehow seems longer when the wind is blowing in your face" But spring always comes

Lovely poetry. I saw the symbolism on first read, but that is just me, I see symbolism in just about everything, my children used to get upset with me when we would see a new movie together, and I always saw the symbolistic messages that came across. They always said "Why can't you just enjoy the movie, and not see into it. We must be birds of a "feather"

Septsong, Good for you! Glad you understood this poem. I am the one who has trouble interpreting others poems.

Seasonal winter and lifes winters occur with amazing regularity. Life is like a mountain range I think...one minute you are at the top, the next falling, then at the bottom and then making your way back up again. The springs of life are hope and faith....the warmth of which cheers you and gives you strength to go on.

Uh oh, let me stop blurbing here, I just found this poem so beautifully symbolic of life...I tried comparing life with a rose once, maybe I'll post that some time!

Lovely poem!

Love and hugs,
Lizzie
