To Believe

How can I thank you?
Our friendship,
from the start,
has been natural to me
like breathing,
blinking.
Soft when we allow it to be,
intense and sharply honest
at times.
Just the right amount of funny
sprinkled about
for good measure

but

for some days now
I have lived in a dark place.
A place with rooms I know
you would recognize
because you've lived there, too,
before.

For these few days
I've not been able
to be here with you
or for you
and for that,
dear one,
I am sorry.

I hope that you can
understand
and trust that I have not
departed from you,
that I am still here
thinking of you
and
missing you
but from these dark rooms,
reaching out seems
so many blind miles
away
sometimes impossible
and sometimes
I forget how to do it.
How to know
what is real
and what just
feels real.

I want to be able to
breathe
laugh
speak without choking
sleep
cry for what brings joy
sigh
for the bittersweet
knowledge
of love
dance within
the waltz of the wind
feel myself being
held
and cherished.
Trust.

I am still here
and loving you
in my way...in our way
and wishing that I could
stay with you
and cursing that I cannot
just yet
and praying that
you can forgive me.

And longing
always longing
to believe.

Dear LadyClaire

Claire, no need to worry. A true friend understands. But you know that! Grief does someday become less painful, it just takes alot longer than you think it will...but your friends will still be there. Wonderful poem!

Claire,
What do you mean when you said earlier you could write free verse poems like me? This far surpasses me. There's so many great lines here, it'd be redundant to list them all, because I'd basically be repeating the poem. I wish I were exaggerating. Your talent is staggering, raw, measured, focused, humorous, hopeful and just plain beautiful.

I find it difficult to respond to poetry such as this.  Exceptionally written as always.

I screwed up. I meant "What do you mean you said you wished you could write freeverse poems like me." Argh, I'm going to bed.

I must agree with the others here Claire ... you are without a doubt, one of the best writers I have ever read ... I don't say this to cause your head to swell ... or to hurt anyones feelings ... there are other exceptional writers here as well ... My prayers go up for your speedy recovery

Parker...thank you for seeing beauty in this.

Denise...yes, grief reverberates into every crevice of one's life, and takes its time about receding, but is a natural process, to be sure. Thank you, Denise, for your encouraging words...and for reading.

Mike (bsq)...what's staggering is your lavish praise...knock it off! (but thanks)     What I meant about your freeverse style is how you write in what comes across to the reader as stream of consciousness...and for your reader, it's as if one is inside, thinking and feeling and looking out of you. I admire your ability to bring me into you.

Mike...thank you for reading and for responding...is it the personal nature of the piece that makes it difficult? I appreciate your response, but no need to ever feel obligated to respond to my posts, you know?

Serenity...hugs back, and thank you.

Rex...yes, MANY exceptional writers! Thank you, Rex, for everything.

Aimster...thank you for reading, and welcome...I look forward also to reading your work.

Michael...your sweet response was magic to me. Thank you.

Marge...thanks so much for reading, Marge. I'm glad you liked this.

James...and to read of your reaction to it, also a joy. Thank you, James.

Hoot Owl...I am the lucky one, I think. Thank you, Ruth, for your warm words.

Suthern...Thanks so much, for reading and letting me know what you think.

SEA...I'm glad you enjoyed reading it, thank you!

Many thanks to all...Your responses have me a wee bit overwhelmed today. You are a treasure, each.
