When I was getting married,
I had several bridal showers.
At each one, some games were played
To wile away the hours.
One had the married ladies
Offering the bride advice.
The marriage was a big mistake,
But their words still seem quite wise.
Old-fashioned suggestions they are
From women used to strife
Who knew what aided their struggles
To be a fine mate and good wife.

Don't go to sleep on anger
Or part on words of ire.
Treat each other with respect
And you'll keep passion's fire.
Don't "trash" your mate to others
For when your temper's through
They'll remember you married a moron
(And that reflects badly on you!)
Don't criticize in public -
Those words are for his ears alone,
But when your man deserves praising
Tell all! Telegraph! Telephone!
With him more than with any other
Remember the Golden Rule.
Your job is to be his partner
Not to make him feel like a fool.
God created Eve from a rib bone
So that woman should stand at man's side
But when treated well, a husband makes
A pedestal for his bride.
Your life is something you must build
Carefully, brick by brick
With love as the mortar to hold you
Together through thin and thick.
Make prayer a part of your marriage
For if you give thanks every night
You'll cherish this gift God has given
In sending you "Mr. Right."

Got me smiling with this one!
Such wise words of wisdom,
for ANY relationship,
married or not.
I will print this one out,
as I know many who should heed
this well-worded advice.
Good Job!

Balladeer: But... but... but.... just think of all the repercussions. *G* If we actually treated each other with mutual respect, many of our family law courts would be gathering dust instead of overloaded dockets. *G*

Thank you, Balladeer and Denise... I'd about decided I'd laid a great big egg with this one... I appreciate your comments to the contrary. *G*

Suthern these are words to live by! Sometimes I forget to do that. But more often than not, I give thanks for mine. I may write in anger at times, but I am thankful. When God is at the head of a marriage I think you're right, the courts would start collecting dust. I'm all for that!

This has a lot of trues written
Well done dear suthern

The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools.

Belle - This is one fantastic poem!  It has so much wisdom.  I especially agree with the advice about trashing a mate.  I've heard other men do that, and it always lowers them several notches in my eyes.  Lorelei has a huge lifetime responsibility - to make me happy (as I have for her).  To trash her would be the worst form of betrayal for all the hard work she's already done.  If I betrayed her for that, could anybody else ever trust me?  Its not always paradise in our home, but that's because I'm so stupid at times.  The good Lord knows that Lorelei gives 100% to making us both happy.

geesh - you really got me gong with this poem, lil Belle.  The true mark of a great poem - does it touch people?  Yep - yours did.

Thank you very much RG, Carol, & Helmut! *S*

Hoot: It would be nice if there were guarantees... give your best efforts and they'll be rewarded... but love doesn't give those more than any other part of life does. *S*

LJA: Silly sailor. *S* We've already nominated Lor for sainthood just for putting up with you... so you wouldn't dare trash her to any of us! LOL. Thanks, dearie... as for making you think... I guess that was the purpose of the game as much as the advice was. *S* I remember my aunt talking about the trashing... she gave a sly glance at my grandmother when she said that she'd run home to mama exactly once... and it taken another 10 years to convince her mother that she hadn't married a dog after all. *G* My mother was dead by then... but I got the point! *S*
