Late evening shadows grow and elongate into
ebony giants, stalking the faint remaining light
from across the freshly cut grass of my front
lawn, where a few sundried clippings swirl
under the cooling gaze of a soft north wind

The slight fermented scent of blade cut apples
resting in pieces under a grove of Macintosh
drifts to distant places, far within the shrouded woods where hungry deer lift their heads and scent
the direction of a meal, awaiting their consumption

Delicately, they stalk slowly from the safety of
their dark wooded abode, lightly stepping into
an uncut field of towering timothy grass and
rambling tangled blackberry bushes, following
the scent of fallen apples awaiting their perusal

By chance, in the faint outlinings of the moon
I catch a glance of the boldest deer pacing
across the dark hooded lawn, delicately removing
an apple from the dew drenched grass, and then
slowly lifting it's head, while chewing on the core

The more bashful and hesitant deer slowly creep in
from the shadows, casting quick wary glances
at the human habitations, before setting themselves
upon a late evening dinner, occasionally glancing up
while pale moonlight feflects from their eyes

I thought you painted a great picture here! I would have loved to sit and watch that.
How awesome!

I love the images you portray, and I love deer for their freedom and grace to coexist with us, while we take away their wooded habitant. Great poem, thanks for sharing.
