Reposted now that he is seven!!!

My only son has almond eyes;
he's only seven and often cries.
He's short and thin for his tender age;
his heart of hope often dances with rage.
People say he won't settle down;
he fidgets too much, he's such a clown.
They say he argues, finds flaws in each word.
He tries to explain how the world is absurd.

He thinks too much, worries more.
A tornato may come or there may be a war.
He loves his family wants to be smart,
does "nothing right" and hurts in his heart.

He needs to be loved, honest and real.
He needs to be taught its okay to feel.
I can't keep him safe in a Mother's embrace,
despite the pain I often see on his face.

He says he's "dumb", but he's far too wise.
he whispers "I'm scared" with couragous eyes.
The world can't yet see all that he holds
a bright sense of hummor, a heart of gold.

Soon he will grow and maybe "sit still"
but what of the world he lives in until.
I only can smile and tell him I care,
remind him he's good and I'll always be there..

Someday he'll argue and people will see
that what's now a "disorder" was meant to be.
He'll learn from the label he wears each hour
that challenging doubt gives a soul power.

for Travis from Mom...

Michael, Thank you so much for your reply and kind feedback. This poem always makes me feel rather emotional, but then again, I am just a bit biased.

A dream is within every one of us
Sometimes it just takes longer to wake up
A very nice poem for Travis

 The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools.

helmut. Thanks for responding. Travis is awake already (the problem is some would say too awake..too observant, even too smart.) Sometimes it's labels we have to peel off when we do wake up that are the problem.

Beautiful Christie...this young man is so lucky to have you in his life.
And you to have him.
Wonderful read....left me feeling a little teary...but anything about children usually does....especially something as sweet as this.

Christie, this poem you've written for and about your son is just wonderful. Our children are all "special" naturally, but some that our society "labels" have an even more special and unique perception to share with the world. As an adult with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and a high degree of intelligence and creativity, I can attest to the fact that "labels" are often misused, misplaced, and most consequentially, misunderstood. Your devotion to and support of your son is precious and will be his guiding beacon all through his life, for you are the one to accept him and remind him that he is a specially gifted blessing to you, to the world and to himself. You sound like a very special Mom. Thank you for sharing another heartfelt and poignant work of beauty with us.
