The Anguish of February

Why this melancholy
I think to myself,
blaming the rain.

Surely time has
eased the anguish of February.
So many years have passed
since that night that lasted.

February fourteenth
feathered into my year
unexpected this time,
when I usually dread
its irruption into
hot tears from a cup
I can never empty.

This day
when love gives to itself
this child crafted
a hand made heart
on red construction paper
not knowing
it would be her last.

I have raged at heaven
for years for explanation
that catalogues a reason
and have only learned
that love does not die
and loss always hurts.

So February has again
torn my heart, it’s true,
and time is measured this way,
each year the same,
with sadness

and the rain is not to blame.

Martie,
Some of your most beautiful poetry is born of sorrow, and its beauty makes me weep.

Deeply painful and moving, Martie.  Stunningly beautiful work, as always.

I am writing through tears. It is so true, the love never dies and the loss always lasts. Maybe that is all the answer we will ever get this side of heaven. My heart goes out to you. HUGS

Liz--It's true, sorrow does write itself into hearts that understand.  Thank you for reading.

Sy--Thank you so much, your words are comforting.

Alwye--Thank you for such a wonderful compliment.

Marge--Thank you for the love and friendship.

Denise--Thank you for understanding, and for the hug.

Cerenity--Thanks for responding and for the prayers of comfort.

Thanks for being there for me Passions, when it seems that all around me are tired of my February blues--I needed someone to understand and listen and you were there.
