Reality can feel an anchor's weight
A burden heavy for the weary heart
It brings a flood refusing to abate
Cascading falls of tears it does impart.

Hard lessons learned can be a trusted friend
Its counsel heeded is a healing balm
That gives a buoyant courage to transcend
Impending storms that threaten waters calm.

Deep sorrow is a necessary thing
The soul pressed down by dire pain will yield
Sweet wisdom’s fruit that to the soul will bring
A haven safe behind its mighty shield.

Accept the pain just as the joy in life
For character is sculpted by strife’s knife.

And slight is the sting of his trouble
Whose winnings are less than his worth;
For he who is honest is noble,
Whatever his fortunes or birth.~~~Alice Cary, ~Nobility~

Denise-
I believe we are products of what we have been exposed to, both good and bad.  Obsticals, in victories overcoming them, have a way of shaping ourselves, too.  I liked this poem very much.  The thought pulls together nicely in the end with the "knife".

Denise, your words speak truth.  We learn more from those hard lessons then from any wonderful fun.  Loved the poem and thought.

Denise... "deep sorrow is a necessary thing" I like that very much. "Accept the pain just as the joy in life". I am glad I read this. Your poem has helped to sooth tonight. Thank you.

As you have stated so well we are sculptures of what life has taught us.

   Denise,

Thank you, Betty, Rich and Cerenity for reading and commenting. I'm glad that it spoke to you. I think sometimes just realizing we are not alone in our painful experiences, that it is a universal thing, goes along way in healing the hurts! Thanks again for reading and commenting!

Very well crafted, Denise, and such an important message, for how does one measure joy with no trials and sorrow with which to compare?

Denise, your poem is a big help right now, I hope I can weather this storm that's raging, and that I can come out that much stronger. Right now this ship is sinking, anyone have a life raft?

Denise, my dear friend, how very true without pain, we could not truly appreciate joy....without darkness, we could not appreciate the light...without sadness, we would know no joy. Thank you for this suttle reminder at this point in my life.

Thank you, Balladeer! I'm glad you liked it!
I think the main problem has been fixed (the telephone loop outside my house...I am having the inside wiring checked tomorrow just to make sure I am running at the optimum performance level but my connection has improved ten fold...or so it seems... as of now!)
