I watched a spider weaving,
With the tiniest of threads.
A silken thread of danger,
In which many bugs were lead.

She dangled from a single branch,
Just air beneath her feet.
She wound around this tiny rope,
Not scared of what's beneath.

She lit upon a little leaf,
And climbed her way back up.
She started on her trip once more,
She knew soon that she would sup.

I watched her weave for quiet a while,
The day began to dim.
I lost her in the waining light,
A chill caressed my skin.

I looked back in the morning,
The web was all complete.
There shining with the morning dew,
Each sparkle, Oh so sweet.

She worked so hard to build this home,
Never once did she give up.
Even when the neighbour boy,
Near destroyed it with his cup.

She set at once to repairing,
Her life, also her home.
All that strength and courage,
I'd like to call my own.

Here I stand surrounded,
By the pieces of my home.
I am just defeated,
And weary to the bone.

Tell me where the spider finds,
The resource to repair.
A shattered life once beautiful,
And far beyound compare.

I take a breath, begin to move,
Picking pieces one by one.
Hoping that today I sup,
When the day is done.

Such is life, picking up pieces and moving on, even when we don't think we can or want to. I think in time we find that it IS a beautiful world and much of our strength comes from overcoming the hardships.
Your poem is very well written and is a nice analogy.
Best to you,
Danny

Excellent comparison, Marilyn. We could all learn from that spider. Spiders don't have the ability to think, to cry, to make excuses, to feel sorry for themselves, to look for pity or fall into many of the traps we humans do. They have a goal and they achieve it through sheer determination and a refusal to quit, regardless of the circumstances.

the black widow spiders' web is spun so precise ... that it was used in the Norton
bombsite during WW2 ...

Hoot...Yes, there are times when all we can do is trudge with those pieces. Picking them up when we have no idea where to put them.

Meadowmuse....Thankyou and I agree. Hard work accomplishes much.

Balladeer....Sometimes I think it would be wonderful to go purely on instinct. Nothing to hold you back or bring you down. then I realize how much of life would be missing. Thankyou my friend.

Rex....That is a very interesting piece of information. Can't quiey figure out how those webs would be used...but it is still interesting.

Beautiful imagery, wonderful analagy.  It was lovely to read Marilyn.  Well done my sis

May the world hug you today,
With it's warmth and love.
I pray it whispers a joyful tune in your heart,
That tell you there is a friend sitting in another corner of the world,
Wishing you well and
wishing you love......

Marilyn, Your words here are so beautifully spun into a fabulous poem. Never did I compare the two or even analyze as well as you the true mystery of a spiders life. (they are not my favorite creature)Thanks for sharing this wonderful poem.

Man, did this one ever hit home!

We'll find that reserve of strength somewhere, it's called survival, right?

Thanks for this!

Excellent poem Marilyn. Not only does it flow wonderfully, but it has a powerful message behind it. Sometimes determination is all we have, and we have to cling to it. We are never defeated until we give up.

Marilyn....a spider acts only on instinct to do what it is programmed to do and really thinks not too much about a web in tatters.

We act with emotions and I am so glad we were created that way...to experience sadness or loss and then to let those negative feelings give way to love and hope. A spider never gets to experience those other emotions. The next meal is all that matters.

I'm sure you will Marilyn
Such a beautiful poem
Sad it's true, but still moving
Well done, very well

If you keep destroying a spiders web
It becomes uneven when the spider works it over
So eventually the spider moves away
and start's a new web somewhere safe

The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools.
