And he just Smiled

No more pets that steal inside
then leave with bitter heart repair,
so many sweet and lovely, yes.

Mitzy, my first cat
beguiled by peanut butter and jelly
and now Needful
cat of black and white,
prancing in with no request,
except, just touch me,
again and again.

Tiger, dog of hugs
and mixed blood and Peter
and Pasha and La Noe the playmates
of my children.

There was Nuffin, cause when we asked
that’s what my son answered and
Scratch the cat, my daughter found
abandoned in the mountain where
her ashes now lie.
And Thomas, who walked in
through the doggy door one day
and curled up on the clean clothes.

But then I said no more to dogs,
and cats, well Needful takes care
of herself, but still takes up space
in my heart, you know.
I am getting to old for broken.

But, my dear and ever watchful husband
on seeing my look of captured wonder
while looking in the pet shop window
at tiny two month old Chihuahua
said Happy Valentine's Day
then proudly pulled
from out his shirt front
this brown and white sweetness.

You’ve got to be kidding, I said
and he just smiled.

Her name is Precious.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

To all the Nuffins of the world, you got a friend, who pulls everyone's heartstrings with her poetry, and whose own are pulled with a little wag of a tail or a little meow.
This is adorable.
