Drawers and Thoughts of a Daughter

I would go again in to my motherís drawers
where her scent lingers
on aged scarves I never liked
but which she used, and on her,
they looked good.

I would finger her jewelry from the Ď40s
and 50ís;
she didnít have much jewelry beyond
those dates,
and the pieces were so heavy.

I would look at the cards
she saved, and recall the day
and why I sent them, just to feel
me smile again.

I would read the letters I wrote
and hope they made her smile
or laugh
and never cry.
Although they probably did.

I would go once more to her bed,
stroke her pillow where she last
laid her head
and wonder of her thoughts.

I would breathe her pillow in.

I would talk to her about my thoughts
of getting older,
on subjects we didnít have a chance to
discuss
or cuss.

I would acknowledge her successes in life
and of the difference
of us as wives
even though we were mother and daughter.

I have many good friends, here and beyond
and in my motherís absence
they share guidance and concern
but they are not my mother.

Perhaps her words would be the same
as theirs,
but it would be her voice.

And her scent.

I miss you, Mom.

This is so sweet and sad.  It appeals to so many senses, and is filled with such regret and sorrow. Tenderly written, it tugs at my heart.  I'm so sorry for your grief, and that empty hollow place in your heart.  Thanks for sharing.

Would you care to share it at:"Coming Through the Fire"? http://www.angelfire.com/zine/bereaved

It is amazing what memories are invoked at various times.  I appreciate everyone's heartfelt responses.

SEA - a million hugs back to you...

WilliamHugh - thank you for sharing your thoughts...

devina - I am sorry that you can relate, I hope you share the memories as well...

Pepper, for so long, I didn't know what to write in her memory - but this fits...

jascavney, hug her as soon as you can...

Rosemary, if you think it worthy, you can copy it over to your site.  I have edited it appropriately.

Thank you all.

Memories is all what's left for you
But my heart remembers you
Memories is all that you can feel
But my heart feels it so real

A very nice poem towards your mother
I'm sure she know's Sunshine

Very sad, tender, and exceptional at the same time....I think the last line, "And her scent", is what got me; I can still remember the scent of the perfume my mother wore when I was a child...what memories it envokes.  Great work.

Sunshine-
You tugged my heartstrings here.
Yeah, you sure did.
Beautiful memories.
Lingering scents.
The sound of her voice.
I re-visited them all.

BSC, sometimes we are very, very fortunate and eventually find a place for our voice... Passions is one of those places where we can let our hearts cry...or sing...

Thank you.

..so timely that this poem comes back around, for I too have reflected on Mom lately and today I think I shall visit her drawer also, with many the same items that you speak of and reflect and smile. Precious is this piece.  Love, Marcy
