Under Our Smiles

We meet and part.
Our talk is all of here and now,
Our conduct equally as trite.
In no act or word
is there any future,
any past.

Under our smiles
Lie the unspoken truths:
I know that you've grown past wanting me,
Long past needing me in your life.
And you know when I leave
To whom I will go.

Can even love be treated so?

Wow Beki!
This just grabs you and jerks you upright. I think more than a few of us can identify. Great poem.

This definitely brings back memories ... from the first marriage
I much prefer the memories from the marriage I have now

Many of us have been there
You put feelings in nice poetry here
Such emotional piece
Thank you

The ability to describe life with words is similar to painting a picture; both can be powerful tools.

Thank you Tasi, Rex, Devina and Helmut..I am glad you could relate. I wrote this poem about 15 years ago, and since have learned how to keep that relationship in perspective and not be hurt by the might have beens anymore.
