You Can't Break This Tender Heart

I've been deceived by many
I've been abused by few
And kicked around by ignorance
And people that I knew

I've started over several times
And lost at many games
I've had a lot of friends before
And never knew their names

I've fought in weary battles
I've gone against the grain
I've climbed a steep and narrow path
In wind and mud and rain

My nerves were spent in anguish
My heartbeat spent in fear
My spirit's void of suffering
My eyes are dry of tear

I've built a shield of armor
Around this heart of mine
Made of life's misfortunes
And love I left behind

So you may come into my life
But please make no mistake
This delicate, tender, fragile heart
Is impossible to break

So please don't fall in love with me
Or speak words that are true
Or you'll disarm this tender heart
For I'm in love with you

Elizabeth Santos

i liked this poem....initially found it to be disturbing...isn't it sad that sometimes we shelter ourselves in our own safe havens and grow suspicious of human nature....?

but when i came to the ending--the speaker possessed a glimmer of hope cos she(Is the speaker a "she"?),that made me like the poem even more...don't we like happy endings")

catwoman and Rex, Thank you

Kaile, it shouldn't be disturbing, It's only that experience teaches, and sometimes we're too trusting with those who can't be trusted.

Hoot, You know what I mean

A fragile heart and a tender hand
this love will stand.

Sigh! Lovely, Liz.
