For fourteen years he lived the pampered life
That furry little guy who stole my heart
He cuddled with me every single night
Tonight in tears we finally had to part.

I was the one without fail that he sought
He always ran to greet me at the door
His gentle purring always comfort brought
He was my pal but now he's here no more.

His suffering I could no more deny
So selfishly I long refused to see
The sadness in his eyes he couldn't hide
At last I had to face reality.

They say that death is just a part of life
And tears will end someday that's just the way
His pain's now gone, I've ended all his strife
But just right now I wished he could have stayed.

In memory of my cat 'Doobie', my buddy, who I had to have put to sleep tonight.

Denise, I'm so sorry. My Baby was Gussy. She just dissapeared though. I never got a chance to tell her good-bye.She was an old gal, and was the best cat I ever knew, I'm trying to stop the tears rolling down my face. I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a dog now. I could never have another cat. Again, I'm so sorry, I know what you are feeling.... Hugs to you- SEA

I wish I didn't understand this one.  It  is SO hard...I too, lost "my familiar," and it shall be as the song says:
"after twenty years she still grieves..."

My heart is with you.

My strong condolences, Denise. As a pure animal lover, I know how attached one can become and how hard it is. I'm sorry.

It wasn't LongJohn's doing, was it????

Thanks for your kind words, Rebecca, SEA, Serenity, Elizabeth and Balladeer. I appreciate your kindness. I prolonged his suffering for six months and I just couldn't bear it anymore.

Elizabeth- Beagle was quite a handful, wasn't he?!

Balladeer - No, even LongJohn would have  loved him. He never clawed anybody, even though he could have. He was a real sweetie!

Denise-
What a tender reminder to us all of the
joy our pets bring into our lives.

This pet lover certainly knows
how much this hurts.

I've loved the best furry, and feathered, friends anyone could have hoped to love.
My heart has been filled with happiness
by the antics of each of them.

I wouldn't trade the memories of the
love of these creatures for anything.

I'm making a donation to my local
Animal League in Doobie's memory.

Sorry, sweetie.
I know you'll miss 'Doobie'.

I have tears stinging my eyes for you. I nearly lost one of my dogs last year and it brought back all those memories of anguish for me.
They say the more you grieve for a pet, the more it was loved. I am sorry for your loss but you did do the right thing.

Denise, I'm so sad for your loss.  The unconditional love and faith of a pet is a blessing we are given...they offer comfort and companionship, and endless memories after they leave us.  *Big Hugs* to you.

*sniff* This is moving. It reminds me of my first loss. It was only a turtle and I was only eight years old, but I never cried so hard again until the day my father died.

Ok..I can reply now that I've stopped crying. I've been here, Denise and it is very hard...our pets become more than just pets, they become family.  I'm sorry for your loss....but think of him cavorting in heaven!  An angel dog!

A very heartfelt poem, my sympathy for your loss. I too am an animal lover and lost a couple dogs in my lifetime, so can appreciate what you're going through. They are special and I know their souls must go on.

Denise, I am so sorry for your loss!! When I lost my cat Spike I didn't think I could ever have another cat but now I have Sneakers and he isn't anything at all like Spike but he gets just as much love though it's of a different kind. Spike and Doobie will be greatly missed but the memories will be cherished forever. ((((BIG HUGS))))

Thank you all for your caring and sympathy. I'm just trying now to visualize Doobie free of pain and having a grand old time up there in heaven (don't know if they really go there or not...but then again why wouldn't they?) Thanks again!
