(Hoot, I've never forgotten your kind comments about this one. Thank you)

My poems may not be classics;
They may never make the grade
That separates the amateurs
From masters of their trade.
They may never reach anthologies
Or even magazines,
Or ever be considered masterful,
By any means.

They may go through Time unnoticed
But, one thing I promise you,
Is, whatever I may offer
Is the best that I can do.

There's a chance I'm not as gifted
Or, as my ex-wife believed,
That my father's sperm count faltered
On the day I was conceived.

Perhaps my grey cell count is lower
Than another man's
But, whenever I present myself,
I do the best I can.

A poem has integrity.
It puts us on display.
A testament of our beliefs
Is there in what we say.

Sincerity cannot be faked;
Pride has no substitute.
If we don't give it our best shot,
Why take the time to shoot?

Let's help enrich each other
And this world in which we live.
In poetry, and friendship, give
The best that you can give.

Buddy, I applaud the sentiments greatly. This is the first of your poems where the meter was so sporadic: a venture into new artform perhaps? As a friend of mine always says, "Write on"!

You may not be perfect Mike, nor I by a long shot! Being the best that you can be is all anyone can ask for. Write on my friend and live each day as if your last. Love you my friend. ((hug))

Thank you for the comments. 'slinger, some poems are for reading and some for saying. When I recite this one, the meter is right on.

Lorelei...and thank you for being here.

Marilyn...thank you and, yes, I plan to do just that (that's why I got the car)

Sweetheart-
This was right on !
Rolls off the tongue like the melody
plucked from a fine instrument.

Let us ALL subscribe to this edict:

'Let's help enrich each other
And this world in which we live.
In poetry, and friendship, give
The best that you can give.'

Mr. Balladeer,
Shhh! Don't tell anyone, but I heard a rumor that you're one of the best poets around here. Could that be true? - YES!

Always a pleasure reading Balladeer's work.  And once more, you have touched me.  How true to say "the best, is your best"  and I think it is wonderful that you regognize everyone is as significant to eachother as everyone else.  But I wouldn't venture to say that you are on the less talented side.  You have written some of the best pieces I have ever read.  I save almost every piece I read.  Thank you for giving me so much insight

Ive often asked the question
of me what does it take
to find the words of rarity
that a great poet make

when here inside the darkness
i found a shining star
to walk among your footsteps, sir
would be, my best, by far.

Balladeer -- I love your work, and I feel as if I am definitely among the best when in here.  And I definitely feel everyone in here gives the best they can give, whether in poetry or in friendship, and for that I am grateful.     Keep them coming!  You make me smile!

If you love something, set it free, if it comes back to you, its meant to be...

Oh yea..And seperate the amateurs from the masters?...LOL ..it's as though you described me to a tee...don't ya think?....I'm not sure what "grey cell" count is?...But if it has anything to do with hair, mine's not low at all!....And what your wife said?...Hell, that would be considered a compliment from my ex?.....Nicely done 'Deer.....you're a talented old fart for sure.....But don't be too hard on yourself....ya hear?....I'll do that for ya whenever possible....

Oh Balladeer...I do remember this one oh so well, another of my favorites of yours, although I have so many   And everything you write is a classic in my book

I'm not much for Shakespeare
Eliot or Donne
Cummings, Hardy, Hawthorne
Herrick, Cope, or Jong

I haven't studied poetry
Not rhythm and not rhyme
But let me tell you, Balladeer
Yours get me every time

Oh Bal
what a lovely poem, you're so right we may not have it all said and done correctly but it's what is being said that's important and the feelings that are being shown...Once again you've produced a wonderful piece

I knew I had read this one (of course I also knew I loved it.. )... so I didn't hurry over - I let it steep a bit....
So, now here I am to tell you I still love it - and bump it back up.....yep..

Whenever Balladeer does take his pen
[and he does, again and again]
we all sit in awe, then cheer
for words from our own famous Balladeer.

And when he brings back memories
from earlier posts, well, then you see
more and more fall in like with he,
that Master of his own Poetry.

But what is best, what we like the most,
is when he lifts his glass in toast!

Cheers, 'Deer!
